Silver-Spotted Skipper on Pickerel Rush (Explored Jun 20, 2016)
Pickerel rush, also known as pickerelweed, is a native, semi-aquatic plant of the eastern half of North America where it generally grows in shallow water or mud near lakes and streams. It is a food source for a variety of wildlife and waterfowl which eat the leaves, roots, stems and seeds. Pickerelweed is also edible for human consumption. Leaves can be eaten as greens and the seeds can be roasted and eaten as nuts. We planted pickerel rush this spring in the filter system for our koi pond, and it is just beginning to flower.
A silver-spotted skipper is a butterfly with a long tongue.
