Galapagos Penguin (endemic)
Tagus Cove, Isabela | Galapagos
The Galapagos Penguin is one of the smallest penguins in the world and is the only one to breed entirely in the tropics. They are found mainly on the western islands of Fernandina and Isabela, which pushes their range just above the equator, consequently they are the only penguin in the world to be found in the northern hemisphere. The current population is no more than 1800, which together with their restricted range and vulnerability results in an IUCN ‘endangered’ classification rating.
