Hillcrest – Double Award Winning Home.
Terry and Emma Huggett of Terry Huggett Developments a second generation family run construction company based in Mexborough, South Yorkshire commissioned Martin Bell of Transform Architects a fresh thinking Chartered Architectural Practice based in Ossett, West Yorkshire to undertake the design of their new contemporary home which was completed in September 2008.
Inspired by Californian homes, the snow and minimal architecture. Terry Huggett Developments set a brief which was to create the basis of an inspirational home set in the heart of an up and coming regeneration zone in South Yorkshire.
Transform Architects design is far from average and was fully realised in three dimensional modelling prior to submission to planning. The building has clean lines, a metal deck roof, through colour rendered walls, cedar wood panelling, architectural masonry and aluminium windows, all of which would normally be associated with a commercial building.
The Client and Contractor Terry Huggett added value to the contemporary design by finishing the building to the highest standards throughout as well as adding few interior touches such as HDTV, Cat5 cabling, integrated lighting controls and interior sound systems.
The Double Award Winning Hillcrest boasts an oversized double garage, home office, six person cinema room, utility, open plan kitchen - living and dining space with a double height atrium ceiling, four bedrooms, three ensuites and two external balconies.
Hillcrest doesn’t disappoint at any stage from the bottom of the driveway all the way to the last bedroom. The views are fantastic; especially at night where the lights on the horizon appear take the viewer to a Californian hillside retreat overlooking the big city.
The white minimal interior, glass staircase and perfectly proportioned rooms combined with open circulation spaces filled with natural light allow the user to flow through the building gaining new experiences and view points at every turn.
This Sustainable Design incorporates under floor heating, rainwater harvesting and is over insulated. The site orientation was maximised by having the primary living spaces on to the south elevation with large amounts of the glazing for solar gains and the secondary living spaces such as the cinema room, and bathrooms on to the north elevation with small windows to minimise heat loss.
For a total cost of £375,000 including the land Terry Huggett Developments and Transform Architects used their combined knowledge and experience of products and construction to create an outstanding affordable new home which further illustrates that effective communication between the Client, Architect and Contractor can create outstanding architecture without compromise.
If you want to know more this unique project has its own website dedicated to the step-by-step design and construction of the contemporary project which will be completed in April 2009 featuring the design, technical information, photos and video. Web link: www.hill-crest.eu.
Post the completion of Hillcrest Terry Huggett Developments and Transform Architects have teamed up again by completing a contemporary extension in the nearby area of Swinton, South Yorkshire which has also been nominated for an award with Rotherham Borough Council.
