Judyboy and I ventured out to the location where, with controversy, they are demolishing the Providence Fruit and Produce Warehouse. The building, listed on the Historic Register, was constructed in 1929 but became empty in 1998 as large supermarket chains altered the fruit and produce purchasing landscape. It changed hands over the next few years and was eventually purchased by a developer with a proposal to renovate the building into a Quincy-Market like development. Part of the deal was the developer bought the building and land well below market rate to offset the stipulation that the building must be re-used. However, the developer fast-tracked the demolition claiming the building was structurally unsound and a danger to the community.
