Crocker Galleria, San Francisco, April 4, 2023

by Thomas Hawk

Just off the corner of the famed Montgomery and Market Streets in San Francisco’s downtown financial district sits the Crocker Galleria, a three story indoor/outdoor mall. Steps from the Montgomery BART station, it was a bustling place where San Francisco workers used to eat, shop, buy flowers for their loved ones and even get their shoes shined at the stand that Vanity Fair once called the best shoeshine in the world.

The Galleria would host a bustling farmers market once a week and was a permanent fixture of the downtown financial district.

Today it remains a former shell of itself. Many of the closed stores have motivational and aspirational phrases ironically blocking out the views inside the former stores.
