The "Three Old Articles" (老三篇) --- namely "Commemorating Comrade Norman Bethune" (纪念白求恩, 1939), “Serve the People” (为人民服务, 1944), and "The Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains" (愚公移山, 1945) --- are authored by Mao Zedong to feature three individuals, respectively Norman Bethune, Zhang Side 张思德, and the Foolish Old Man 愚公 (or Yugong, a legendary figure of Chinese folklore).
In the poster, the central image features three peasants who were together reading and studying the book -- the "Mass Version" (乙种本) of The Selected Works of Mao Zedong (毛泽东著作选读).
Above them, the imageries of Zhang Side, the Foolish Old Man, and Norman Bethune appear as the backdrop with the following commentaries:
