Volucella bombylans - Bee mimic hoverfly
Great excitement yesterday as I bagged my third species of bee mimic hoverfly for the year and a first ever for me in the case of this individual. That's not to say this one is unusual just that I've never knowingly seen one before.
I think the main reason I'm spotting them is that I now have my 'eye in' as it were and although at first glance they look very bee like in appearance they move like all hoverflies which is quite different to a bee in flight.
Quite an attractive individual I thought.
