Here is just a brief history of my encounter with photography. :)
If I were to categorise my level as a photographer, I think I would rank as a serious, amateur hobbyist. I like having a camera to capture moments and I really enjoy the processes in which a photograph is made; from the thought to framing, to releasing the shutter and reviewing and finally post-processing (or waiting for dev impatiently!) and enjoying the final piece alone or with others. This whole process brings me great pleasure, and I hope you can savour a bit of the joy when you are browsing through my photographs here on my Flickr page.
This is actually my third account on Flickr, hence the rather late "joined date". I didn't put enough effort in the previous two accounts and sadly, I didn't like my user name. 2010 was the year I really felt my "inner photographer" rise up; so I started over and here I am. I'm really pleased with my Flickr right now and I love the community here, especially all the other talented photographers sharing their shots and the informative discussions within group pages.
My first DSLR was the Canon 400D in 2006 as a birthday present from my Mom. I can't thank her enough for getting me this at such a young age! I don't think I would have such appreciation for photography if it wasn't for my early exposure (no pun intended). Ever since, I've been somewhat of a lens/camera pack-rat and spending too much on gear rather than spending more time with the gear I have. (I know it's a bad habit, but I'm getting better!)
It was 2011 when I discovered the art of film photography and I fell in love all over again. It's such a different experience compared to digital. It goes back to the basics of exposing correctly, framing etc. And because there's only a limited amount of frames in a roll of film, it really does slow me down a lot (I'm a rather impatient person). There really is a lot to appreciate in film photography and I would encourage more digital shooters to try it out if you haven't already, because I think it really trains your eyes to look for more photo-worthy shots. I guess what I'm trying to say is I treasure film, yet I admire the endless possibilities of digital photography.
In Q1 2012, I've upgraded my 400D to a second-hand 50D. The 50D feels much better built but I was never unhappy with the "plasticky" build and the small size of the 400D. Although I knew my final hope in my "DSLR roadmap" is to upgrade to full frame, I never thought my 50D would only last till the end of 2012...
On Dec 27 2012, my mom bought me the best DSLR on the market at the moment (imo) as an early birthday gift - the Canon EOS 6D! I was planning to get the body only, but she insisted that I get the 24-105L kit lens as well after the salesman said it was a good investment. I cannot thank my mother enough! The 6D feels amazing. It's not much larger than the 50D, the buttons are all on one side (which is actually not as convenient as my thumb can't really reach all the buttons; but I'll get used to it), the viewfinder is big and bright and the WiFi remote app is pretty slick. Not to mention how clean high ISO is on this wicked DSLR. And I'm still shocked that I have the 24-105L - it's my first L lens! Such a versatile zoom and the f/4 won't bother me one bit because of the high ISO capabilities of the 6D; not to mention the IS is working great. Plus I got the tiny 40STM which makes the whole killer rig just that much more compact. :D
I can't wait for summer and whenever I have free time to shoot with my new 6D.
