Burnaby back alley
The artist Robert Crumb once had a friend go around and photograph telephone and power poles, and all the detritus of modern living which we see, but don't really see, because we edit it out of our perceptions. The place to really see such stuff is in back alleys, like this one, which runs behind Union street in North Burnaby. Here we're looking east, towards Burnaby Mountain. It's a Sunday afternoon, and the loneliness of the afternoon for me is accentuated by the kid with his backpack, a Grade Eight or Nine, wending his way home, perhaps, after studying with friends.
