Title: DREAM ROCKET FOR TRAVIS

Theme: Space

Materials and techniques used: Fabric, various papers, plastic laminate, monofilament

About:

My nephew, Travis Evans-Lombe, passed away March 28, 2013.

I made this panel in his honor and it combines three memorial projects I have created: 'Origin of Painting for Travis', 'Please Mind' and 'I love Jose'. The center figure in the panel is Travis and it is based on a life-size drawing of Travis from 'Origin of Painting for Travis', the memorial performance I did for him after he died. The swallow is from 'Please Mind', a performance about my reaction to my own son's mental illness; swallows are Roman symbols for mothers who live with sorrrow. The figures surrounding Travis and the swallow are 'little Joses' from 'I love Jose', a project that honors Jose Olimpo Alvarez who was killed in the May 22, 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri.

The monofilament rings wrapping some of the Joses represent Saturn rings and connect the panel and the memorials to the beauty of the universe. The green background was Travis' favorite color.

This is the memorial poem I wrote for Travis when he died:

I am a mother who lives with sorrow

I am an aunt who lives with even more sorrow

I am a sister who grieves mightily for the pain my sister must now sleep with every night for

the rest of her life

I am not a very religious person

but I ask the universe to please bear the beautiful soul of

Travis Evans-Lombe

gently upon her waves and her wind.
