Forgotten

Newfoundland Series Photo #6: In July, 1992 the Atlantic cod fishery was shut down in the wake of decades of gross overfishing. For many Newfoundlanders, a way of life that had existed for many centuries had ended. All around the province, there are coastal scenes like this one, speaking to the decay of a once proud industry. However, after a 20 year fishing moratorium, there are clear signs that the cod stocks are once again strengthening. Let us hope that, this time, we learn our lessons and treat this once bountiful resource with the respect that nature deserves.
