Dagebüll 25.09.2012

Landesamt für Küstenschutz, Naturpark und Meeresschutz (LKN): two of the North Frisian islands are linked to the mainland, at Dagebüll, by a curious railway line. With a length of about 9 km and a track gauge of 900 mm, the "Halligbahn Dagebüll-Oland-Langeneß" starts in Dagebüll, continues along a dike to the island of Oland (about 2.2 km long and about 500 meters wide) and, after crossing it, through another dike it reaches the island of Langeneß (about 10 km long and a maximum width of 1,400 m). Although the line depends administratively on the LKN, the few inhabitants of the two islands have the right to use it. For this, a variety of artisanal vehicles (the "Loren") have been built, both self-propelled and towed. For its part, LKN has four Schöma two-axle locomotives, and several wagons and cars.

The operation is carried out in a march in sight regime, with some crossing point along the route. If there are two trains facing each other, some marks indicate which of them is closest to the crossing point and, therefore, is the one that must go back there. Artisanal "Loren" tend to "park" at their owners' houses or hotels, derailing them.
