A short history of the Wright Contour ....
Sorry, make that 'A history of the short Wright Contour" !
Wrights built 4 Contour bodies on chassis which were shorter than the usual 11-metre or 12-metre offerings, and after yesterday's upload of the ACE Puma, I was spurred on to show some more. It turned out that 1996 was a good year for Contour-spotting for me, as I caught up with three of the four that year, and I kept an eye on them all, as they changed hands fairly regularly.
The exception was this one ! Ford had an R-series chassis bodied by Wrights for use as a demonstrator, which was clearly a roaring success, producing no sales at all. I caught up with it at the 1984 motor show at the NEC, and I think this was my only encounter with it.
After an 18-month stint with Ford, it was sold to Herbert's Coaches at Shefford, Beds., who ran it largely unchanged from these colours, and it stayed with them for its whole time on the road - and indeed its whole time off the road. It was withdrawn at the end of 1999, but remained at the depot, along with several other withdrawn vehicles, for many years. It is possible that it is still there now, but out of sight.
