Starling - Lamprotornis superbus

Habitat

Commonly found in scrubland and Savanna throughout Eastern Africa.

 

Wild Diet

This species feeds primarily on the ground, often below, or in the vicinity of, acacia trees. They eat berries and insects.

 

Behaviour

These outgoing birds have little fear of humans, and can often be found near villages and towns.

 

Breeding

Courtship behaviour involves small jumps on the ground, trailing wings, neck outstretched. Breeding season varies within range. Usually four green/blue eggs are laid in a nest of grass and twigs lined with feathers low in a thorny bush or tree or in a cliff hollow. Male and female share responsibility for nest building, incubation, and feeding of young.

Being highly opportunistic feeders superb starlings will visit gardens and picnic areas looking for hand outs from humans.
