Milos Raonic vs. Guram Kostava (Nov. 2005)

I saw in the news today that a young unknown Canadian tennis player has been making some major upsets at the Australian Open this weekend. His name is Milos Raonic and he’s 20.

I have several photos that I took when he was 14 in 2005. There was a tennis pro from eastern Europe (Guram Kostava of Georgia) who was in Barrie to play the Canadian junior tennis champion for that year, Peter Polansky, who was 17, in a charity match. For some reason Polansky could not make it to the match and young Milos Raonic was thrown in at the last minute so that the game could go ahead. I’m assuming that he was there as a spectator and had his gear with him because he was playing there that day? Milos was living in Thornhill, near Toronto, at that time.

It was quite a match and Milos pushed the 30-year-old pro right to the limit. The final score was 6-4 and 7-6 for Kostava. I remember everyone there, including myself, was really amazed at how well he played.

So I'm not surprised that he is knocking off some top seeds at this years Australian Open. Good for him. This is only his 2nd major tournament as well.
