SUMMERTIME 2012, ANCIENT OLYMPIA, PELOPONNESE, S. GREECE #6340A
The birth place of the Olympic Games. It is here that the Olympic games originated, they can be traced back to 776 BC, and were held every four years. A Truce was announced and hostilities ceased for a period of three months.
The Philppeion was erected by Philip II, King of Macedonia in 338 BC, after his victory at the battle of Chaeroneia. It was an Ionic temple, circular in shape, of ivory and gold, and contained the statues of Philips family, Alexander the Great, Olympias, Amyntas III and Eurydice I.
The Philippeion was made by the sculptor Leochares, and was the only structure within the Altis to be dedicated to a human.
Taken during a 5 day photographic vacation (August 2-6, 2012) with my English wife Theresa Jane Brown.
