11.5 Measuring elevation
Another in the series of "mundane aspects of archaeology." The metal rod is a datum, and the string is at a set elevation on the rod. This is determined using an arbitrary start height (say, 100.00) measured across the site with a transit, theodolite, or total data station. This is done to provide a uniformity to various units across the site, where the surface level may vary greatly. Elevations are measured with a tape measure and a line level.
