Monk Parakeet in the Wild

There is a large colony of Monk Parakeets at White Rock Lake in Dallas. They are likely descendants of escaped pets, caged parakeets that were released, or parakeets that flew out of damaged packing crates as they were being shipped in from South America.

 

Now numbering in the hundreds, these parakeets are well established in the area around the old boathouse at White Rock Lake. They have built large permanent nests in the nearby TXU electrical tower (see below).
