Baylor (Floyd Casey) Stadium: The Decades of Transition

by The Texas Collection, Baylor University

The first groundbreaking for Baylor Stadium was held on May 28, 1949. The groundbreaking for Floyd Casey Stadium was January 19, 1990. The last game to be held at the facility is on December 7, 2013, against the University of Texas.

Successfully maintaining and updating the stadium for 63 years is a victory in itself. One example of those who assisted in this effort was the gift of $5 million in 1988 from Carl and Thelma Casey. This helped make possible many needed updates to the stadium. On November 5, 1988, Baylor Stadium was renamed Floyd Casey Stadium, in honor of Carl Casey's father.

Although many interior upgrades were made to the facility, the exterior changes were most noticeable. These include the skybox complex (1991 and 1999) and construction of the end zone complex (1991).

This series of photographs show several examples of events, major renovations, and large turnouts of spectators throughout the years. Countless fans have fond memories of the Baylor/Floyd Casey Stadium era, and many new memories are on the horizon as fans anticipate the new Baylor Stadium's construction to be completed in August 2014.
