16th century monument in St.Laurence church in Ludlow

It commemorates Francis Walsingham, the wife of the famous courtier, poet,diplomat and soldier Sir Philip Sidney.

He was appointed governor of Flushing ( Vlissingen ) to help the Dutch in their fight agains the Spanish.In 1586 he was wounded in action in a campaign in Zuthphen and died in a hospital in Arnhem.
