LNER(NER) Autocar no 3170 (October 24, 2009)

In course of restoration, on date stated above.

A truly pioneer vehicle built in 1903 by York Railway works, was the first railcar in the world to use an internal combustion engine driving generators which in turn powered electric traction motors. As such described then as a 'self-propelled railway carriage'.

The motive power methodology used thus avoided the expensive infrastructure costs of using third rail pickups, electified rails or overhead catenary wires. A generation ahead at the time as a pioneer suffered technical problems but was, nonetheless, popular with passengers, operating in Yorkshire and the North East betwen 1903 and 1931, having 'residential use' thereafter until acquisition by the present owners.

When in service, used with a non-powered driving trailer (also being restored).

Currently housed at Embsay, on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (Yorkshire Dales Railway Museum Trust).
