Investigation name or abstract title: Hepatitis C Outbreak in a Respiratory Care Ward Associated with Frequent Unsafe Injections — Taiwan, 2017

Photo description: Taiwan FETP investigated an acute hepatitis C (AHC) outbreak in a respiratory care ward in August 2017. Of 17 ventilator-dependent patients, 4 developed AHC during May–July 2017. Analysis of RNA sequences of four AHC patients revealed highly homology to a chronic hepatitis C patient of the ward. Epidemiologic study showed that frequent injections and infection control lapses were risk factors for infection. FETP and local health bureau visited the ward and observed invasive procedure practice of health care personnel. Right: the nurse demonstrated using glucometer for finger stick sugar test.
