Never Forget
Six years ago this week (August 6th, 2011) marked a dark day for American fighting forces: Extortion 17, a CH-47D helicopter delivering special operations soldiers on a raid in Afghanistan was shot down. The ill-fated mission saw the single greatest loss of American life during the war in Afghanistan. Among the 38 killed were 15 US Navy SEALs from Gold Squadron, part of the popularly known SEAL Team 6. The raid on Osama Bin Laden's Pakistani compound was just three months before. The owner of the Pennsylvania & Southern Railway has a strong relationship with that community, and his employees turned one of their EMD switchers into this rolling tribute at the end of 2016. Each of the Americans killed are remembered with a star on the cab.
To commemorate the anniversary the employees made sure the locomotive was looking extra sharp and had it out and about, so it was seen by people in the Cumberland Valley Business Park and the Letterkenny Army Depot. The bright, patriotic locomotive catches the eye of people passing by, and the Extortion 17 titles give them a reason to turn to Google and find out why they should never forget.
Here the Pennsylvania and Southern crew pose with PSCC Number 17 after pulling military flats loaded with Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles fresh from refurbishment at the Depot. They stopped briefly for a photo before continuing their work preparing the loads for shipment out on CSX.
