ʻIolani Palace

ʻIolani Palace, a national landmark in Honolulu, HI (1879). It is the only royal palace in the United States. The first royal palace a former missionary's residence in the Kawaiahaʻo compound. The capital was moved to Maui in 1837. In July 1844, a small wooden palace was built on the current site of the palace. This buiding was renamed ʻIolani Palace by Kamehameha V after his brother's given name ("royal hawk"). The king rarely lived there; it was instead used as a place to host dignitaries. Kamehameha V envisioned a more royal establishment and commissioned Aliʻiōlani Hale as a new palace; however, the completed building was instead used for administrative offices. Shortly after Kalākaua ascended to the throne, he visited Europe, noting the great palaces. He envisioned a similar palace for the royal family and comissioned the building. It served as the royal residence until the 1893 overthrow of the monary. Liliʻuokalani was brought to the palace and placed under house arrest in one of the rooms.
