Great Britain, London, Ferris wheel London Eye, a giant observation wheel designed by the architectural team of David Marks & Julia Barfield as a landmark for the new Millennium opened in March 2000. Located between Westminster Bridge & Hungerford Bridge in the Jubilee Gardens on the South Bank of the river Thames. The wheel is 135 mtr high, the rim has a diameter of 120 mtr the structure was built with over 1700 t of steel & more than 3000 t of concrete for the foundations as part of London's millennium celebrations.
The futuristic high-tech looking 32 sealed air-conditioned passenger capsules are attached to the external circumference of the wheel & rotated by electric motors. Each capsule represents one of the London Boroughs, accommodating up to 25 passengers who are free to walk around inside the capsule, nevertheless seating is provided. The wheel rotates at 26 cm per second, about 0.9 km/h, so that one revolution takes about 30 minutes. Each egg-shaped capsule is 8 meters long & weighs 10 t, 80 spokes connect the rim with the spindle.
The observation wheel is the tallest Ferris wheel in Europe, it turns slow enough for people to embark while it is moving & a complete turn takes about 30 minutes, on a clear day you can see as far as 40 km.
