Looks like PO also tried to seal up some holes with some kind of plumbers putty and black spray on sealer. Exhaust gasses being drawn into openings in the rear of the car due to negative pressure within the cabin when the windows are open is a know problem on this cars. The biggest culprit is leaking tail light gaskets but there are a few other openings back here for emissions eval hoses as well. When the gaskets get damaged or old they leak and can contribute to the problem. I'm not sure what these 4 areas were sealed for, although it looks like some bonehead may have drilled holes through from the bottom. These openings are stock and open into the frame rail. Why one would want to drill holes into the frame rail here I don't know.
