Second Transylvania Elementary All-County Chorus Festival
BREVARD, NC (March 19, 2015) – The second Transylvania Elementary All-County Chorus Festival took place on Thursday, March 19th. Students from TC Henderson, Rosman, Pisgah Forest, and Brevard Elementary schools joined forces to rehearse all day, then perform a program of songs starting at 4pm in the Brevard High School auditorium.
The students learned the music for this program at their individual schools, under the direction of music teachers Laura Sullivan, Carolyn Smith, and Sarah Moser.
On the day of the festival, students and teachers worked together throughout the day under the direction of guest conductor Renee Anders. Ms. Anders, a retired music educator from Statesville, NC, holds music degrees from UNC at Greensboro, is a Nationally Board Certified teacher, and holds her Level III certification in the Orff-Schulwerk approach.
Anders has served as the North Carolina Elementary Honors Chorus Chair, the North Carolina Music Educators Association Elementary Section Chair, and was named as the first NCMEA state elementary music teacher of the year in 2009. Her students have performed in the NC Elementary Honors Chorus, as well as the American Choral Directors Association regional and national choruses.
Songs for this concert included the spirituals "Sit Down Lord," and "Deep River," as well as the American folk song, "Old Dan Tucker." Also on the program was a piece written by country recording artist RaeLynn in celebration of the National Association for Music Education's Music in Our Schools Month, which occurs in March, titled "Always Sing." The mass choir also sang "La Musica," in Spanish.
The 125-voice chorus premiered the song "This World Is Full of Beauty," commissioned for the occasion and written by North Carolina composer Tom Shelton, in memory of former chorus member Ashley Shaw. Several Brevard High School musicians also accompanied the group.
This concert was funded by Transylvania County Schools, with thanks to Superintendent Dr. Jeff McDaris for providing that support.
