Part of A Letter From My Mom's Mother January 18, 1977
It has been terrible here. Twenty below zero sum nights with chill factor between 50 And 60 below zero. It has been -14, -12, -8 and -10 at night. We have a heat wave tonight, an even zero. The Schools and a lot of the factories are closed. Fuel Shortage. Those that use gas have to close. Bluffton hasn't had very many days of school since before Christmas. They may have to make up days in the spring. All schools have the same problem. It got so cold here sum nights I put a container under the thermometer so I could catch the mercury when the bottom fell out. It didn't quite make it.
