Nagamachi District, Kanazawa
The Nagamachi or Samurai District is one of the best preserved samurai districts in Japan. Since Kanazawa escaped the WWII bombing, these areas remained intact. Walking through them, is like taking a step back in time.
The district is characterised by various defensive features such as the tsuchi-kabe, or earthen defensive walls; the small canals or moats just before the walls. If you look carefully, you can see the thick walls in this photo.
