Mikoshi
The Takayama Spring and Autumn Matsuri festivals are apparently one of the most beautiful in Japan, which means of course it is one of the most crowded, leading to difficulties in getting accommodation, etc etc. So we settled for visiting the Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall (or the Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan) instead.
The key element of the festival is the procession of floats (yatai) around the town. The procession is led by the mikoshi, which is a portable shrine. It is carried on the shoulders of the shrine bearers around the town.
