American Kestrel (3 of 4) at Duke Farms, Hillsborough, NJ
The American Kestrel couple has become one of our favorites to observe, for they display an almost human like relationship—very caring toward one another. In this particular instance, the female called out from the special birdhouse, and the male, which was initially perched on a branch above, had instantly taken flight and returned with a small snake within no more than a minute. We saw a similar display on one of our previous visits. After the male had provided the female with the meal, it circled the tree a number of times as it surveyed the immediate area. In one of the shots you can see it looking toward the camera. We make certain not to approach the tree too closely.
The late, Doris Duke, had left a wonderful legacy in converting her magnificent estate into a Natural Wildlife Preserve for the public’s education and enjoyment. The paths throughout the estate offer such splendid scenery. One is forever exploring, always seeing something subtly beautiful. There are always pleasant surprises, from the general scenery to the world of the wildlife, even tiny insects and flowers are enjoyable to observe. The bucolic nature of the preserve is so relaxing—akin to meditating while experiencing the landscape. The beauty of visiting Duke Farms is that so many incredible views are there simply by observing all of the surroundings.
