The short explanation; this is my entry for a YouTube competition that had to be anything "80s".
It's short and sweet and I'd love to hear what you thought it was an ad for!
The long explanation;
A YouTube channel that I follow called 'Film Riot' recently re-started a 'Monday Challenge' and the first one was to make something - anything - 80s. It had to be 2 minutes or less and could be a short film, a trailer for a film, a cheesy 80s opening to a tv show (the entry like that that I saw was actually pretty funny), an advert (which is what I ended up choosing to do) or pretty much anything as long as it looked and felt like something from the 80s. With it being so open-ended on what they were looking for the entries varied and was an interesting look at just what people think of when they think about the 80s. For me when it comes to visual stuff and the 80s, it's the VCR look and crappy old tapes that jump from one recording to another (damn I just realised I missed a trick there and should have made that happen in the middle. Darn) so when inspiration hit me at 3am one morning I knew exactly what I wanted to do. It was tough doing it all myself (filming and "acting" in it and then editing and doing the smallest bit of foley) but there wasn't much time left as I found out about it late into the month so it had to be done. I was however helped by my fellow 80s loving actor friend Faye who brought the short script that I wrote to accompany the "ad" to life! After all these years we've finally been able to collaborate again!
On Monday they announced the three winners and although this didn't win I'm still pretty damn proud of it (if you go and watch this you can see what did win - www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qZeN_OImjg ). As you can see from the winners they clearly had an idea of what they were looking for and this wasn't it (none of the "ads" that were entered won, they were all films/trailers) but hey, it was never about the winning for me in this particular case - I just really wanted to have a go at making something 80s and I'd like to think I/we succeeded!
