The great egret, Ardea alba, is a tall and stately bird, graceful in flight, deliberate and stealthy when hunting. In the 1800s its brilliantly white feathers and long, extravagant plumes inspired devastating hunting, wiping out heronries in a single day and driving the species to the brink of extinction in North America. By 1886, it was estimated that 5 million great egrets had been killed for their feathers, for fashion.
While on sabbatical at the University of California at Davis, I frequented the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area to watch birds, and great egrets were always present, usually stalking prey.
Flash is beginning to rethink his life choices.

The Northern Harrier Hawk evolved to fill a unique ecological niche - it seems other raptors were not frustrating enough to attempt to photograph, so this one evolved to push me right over the edge. I think I'm going to be extinct soon from these birds!

Incredible cloud show at Yolo Bypass this evening. Fast changing cycles of rain and sun. At mountains we have so much snow that skiers cannot reach the slopes since the roads are closed. Sunday is expected to be without precipitations. Beautiful and promising March.
An annual rite of passage for California Central Valley photographers like myself is photographing the sunflower fields in Yolo and Sacramento counties in July. Every year, the crops are rotated, so a favorite spot discovered one year, can be tall rows of corn or another crop the next. This year, I was out a little late in the season, but I found this vibrant field in Esparto, which had nice foothills in the background, a nice anomaly for the typical pancake flatness of the central valley.
On Saturday, we went to Yolo Wildlife Area at Davis to drive around and see some birds. We stayed for the sunset. It was pretty nice.

Comme une impression que cette branche à une envie de se jeter dans le vide (métaphoriquement parlant). Il ne faudrait pas oublier on peut regretter ce que l'on est, pas ce que l'on souhaite devenir (changement en bien, dans la logique des choses) !
I should have posted this yesterday, for Halloween! A week or so ago, the entire Yolo Bypass Wildlife area was covered in webs, with many spiders floating through the air on some of them. When I returned this past weekend, there was only one area that still had them after the rains. But boy were they thick. Was this where all of the airborne spiders were traveling to?
