#NPS106 - Happy Founders Day! The Organic Act became law #onthisday in 1916 formally creating the National Park Service.
What to say about our favorite government agency on this, its 106th anniversary? The only thing to say, I suppose; that the National Park Service is perhaps our most noble endeavor. What we choose to save on our planet reveals what kind of species we are. Shall we save our tallest mountains? Our deepest canyons? Our oldest trees? Our waters and our skies and our lands and our history? Even our mistakes? Even the most ugly instances of where our culture has stumbled so that we may learn from them and improve? Yes. All that and more. In these uncertain times, when many are actively questioning the purpose and functionality of the National Park Service, may we always remember that what we choose to save about the land and our past is what we choose to save about ourselves. The National Parks are our best idea because they are OUR democratic spaces and they reflect OUR inclusivity and diversity.
May the NPS have its best days before it.
Happy 106th anniversary!

Happy anniversary to one of my favorite places in the world. John Muir’s “Range of Light”, Yosemite, was set aside by the federal government, #onthisdayinhistory , 135 years ago. This action predates the founding of the National Park Service and even Yellowstone’s incorporation as the first National Park. Yosemite came before all of that, set aside under the care of California, for all to enjoy. For me, Yosemite is the place of quiet contemplation and spiritual grandeur that really threw my love of the National Parks into overdrive. It is the best example of what ‘America’s best idea’ is and an inspiration to the world. And today, in 2025, The National Park Service is woefully underfunded, understaffed, abused, and at the whims of a hostile government that is shut down. The park, however, isn’t. Yosemite will remain open, a blessing for those who visit respectfully, but at the whims of those who will abuse and misuse their public lands. Once these places are ruined, they are gone. Once they are misused, they are damaged. We must continue to honor them. We must continue to fight for them. Anything less is capitulation to a government that expects your compliance to a system that is designed to favor the few over the many and totally discount the true meaning of what Yosemite stands for and represents. Speak up. Be a light for the Range of Light.

Today is #indigenouspeoplesday, marking a day to reflect on and celebrate the people of America, who, quite literally, were here first and are still here, to this day. Every group in America, besides them, are immigrants to this land. Today’s society did not passively inherit this land from indigenous societies; history’s long and bloody and gloomy shadow hangs over this continent. Today’s commemoration really encompasses and encapsulates what the mission of most National Parks aim to accomplish: to preserve history at its most unbiased and to show where we have come from and where we are going. When we reflect on our stewardship of indigenous legacies, our way forward to deeper understanding is clear.

One last @mesaverdenps shot for the road- we didn’t see much wildlife on this trip, but we did get to see one of the animals I was eager to see! A collared lizard darting over the rocks and looking to warm up and sun himself in the summer heat.
Don’t be fooled by the recent “make America beautiful again” executive order that’s been signed in the face of the budget bill being passed and seemingly restoring funding for the parks that’s been cut. It’s just a political maneuver to make this administration look like it has to solutions to problems that it has created. Keep calling and speaking out.

“With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” - Eleanor Roosevelt
Here we are, 21 years past a massive national tragedy, and in the midst of another tragedy. I was 10 when 9/11 happened. At the time, I thought the world was ending. As I grew older, I realized more and more that I had lived through an event that changed the world in ways subtle and obvious. I have that feeling again, now. Much as we were on that bright September day in 2001, our shortcomings and inadequacies are laid bare. May we rebuild stronger and better and kinder and wiser, as we have done before.

The dynamic diversity found in Everglades National Park is driven by the the sheer dynamism of the weather found in this environment- tropical and rainy, the Everglades can often be gloomy, grey, and wet. On the day that I took this picture, a blanket of clouds covered the entire park and boxed in the scenery. But then, as the sun began to sink towards the horizon and break through the clouds, a magic show began.

Happy #NationalWildlifeDay! Celebrated on September 4th, National Wildlife Day is about we can do to protect endangered species and their habitats. This bear encounter in @sequoiakingsnps was one of the best wildlife encounters I’ve ever had and perfectly exemplifies how habitats and species are intertwined. The bear might not be overtly threatened but Sequoias and their environments are under constant threats from wildfires and global warming. We have to protect one to save the other. Getting to see this bear was a sublime experience; he paid no attention to us and was content to hunt for roots and berries in the middle of the meadow, about 100 yards from the trail. This gave me ample time and security to set up my tripod and document his work as the sun began to set lighting up the trees around us. It was a perfect moment. Swipe through the gallery to see the sunset, too. A bear and a sunset amongst Sequoias! Time stood still. It was a wonderful moment that’ll be with me for a long time.

From July 2022:
One last day in this joyful place. I love wilderness. I love solitude. I love how these two wonderful qualities are found in abundance in National Parks. That said, sometimes, and especially in our oldest and more historic National Parks, there is a spot that everyone goes to and partakes in what I call "traditional tourist activities". That usually means seeing the most iconic or typical overview of the park they're in. Old Faithful is a great example of this. Mather Point, too. Here in Sequoia? It's the Sherman Tree. Seeing people pour into the Sequoia grove and marvel at the largest tree on Earth is joyful. There's electricity in the air. Happiness is found in spades. And there's a sense of solemn and noble purpose too; people have made the pilgrimage to this park, now it is time to act upon the place as generations before us have, too. That's usually executed in everyone gathering for a picture with the tree. But what stands out to me is the reaction immediately following or preceding the picture: pure awe that you're in the presence of something so ancient, so massive, and so pure, and so universal. Nearly everyone who has journeyed to Sequoia has done this. That sense of joy and awe and purpose is palpable. National Parks are landscapes of nature, yes, but also of emotion. This particular landscape is a landmark of joy. I'm going to miss Sequoia National Park very much. I didn't expect how much I would love it, but here we are. Joyous.

“ This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on seas and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls. “- John Muir

Happy 86th anniversary to Joshua Tree National Park, which was designated as a National Monument on this day by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on this day in 1936. Joshua Tree National Park really did a number on me. I’ve fallen in love with other parks upon my first visit before like Bryce, or Yellowstone, or Smoky, but Joshua Tree is so weird and surreal and captivating in a whole new way.
Joshua Tree feels like an alien world. It's not the same alien beauty of Yellowstone, which has its "traditional" wilderness beauty augmented by the bizarre sights of steam and colorful springs, where the ethereal motion of steam and water add a kinetic layer to the land. Joshua Tree isn’t the same as the alien beauty of Bryce, whose weird hoodoo shapes and forms become charming and enchanting as you make your way around or into the amphitheater. Instead, Joshua Tree’s essential strangeness comes in the downright stark and bleak beauty of sun-bleached rocks providing a backdrop to artfully the twisted and convoluted outlines of beautiful trees, each one with its own personality and a story to tell. Joshua Tree is a Dali painting come to life in stone and flora and fauna.
It's. Just. So. Different.

Today is the 137th anniversary of the dedication and unveiling of The Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable symbols of American culture. She is, of course, a personification of the Libertas, the Roman Goddess of liberty and freedom and all the usual patriotic themes that are the hallmarks of an American worldview. That being said, her symbolism and her deeper meanings as a symbol of inclusion and immigration are what truly undergird her as a hallmark of American culture.
Fatefully, she is an immigrant herself- conceived and built in France and given to America as a gift, her creator, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi deemed her as tacit sign that enlightenment and liberty had a home in America. Additionally- she was built next to Ellis Island: the gateway to America for scores of European immigrants pouring into the country during the turn of the last century. Liberty soon became a sign of welcome, a symbol for the oppressed, and a wide marker of acceptance for all into the greater American culture. Therefore, she is a perfect symbol of American culture at its best- one of immigrants, acceptance, and freedom.
- This is a composite shot of Independence Day fireworks, merged with a shot of The Statue of Liberty to simulate what a ‘true to eye’ firework experience is at the Statue of Liberty, when the shells are launched around Manhattan. The fireworks are shot on on a 70-300mm lens at ISO 500, f12, 5 second exposures merged with a single shot of the statue at 1/100, f22.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Super excited about this one. Hawk Hill is one intense place to go shooting, especially at night, and especially when it’s foggy. What I love about this photograph is that you can actually see the fog moving above the Golden Gate Bridge but you can also see it floating right in front of the hills and catching the beams of light from passing cars. The whole experience was surreal and ethereal and otherworldly; you feel like you’re perched above San Francisco, with the whole of the city and The Bay spread before you while the very air and sky in front of you glows and undulates and flashes with streaks of shimmering iridescent vapor. And of course, there’s The Golden Gate Bridge, looming in front of you, overpowering all in its presence, and happily spanning the whole horizon and defining the space. San Francisco is magic.

Sometimes, the second you’re done traveling, and in the absence of all that motion and purpose and fun and discovery, you immediately miss it. You crave it. You could have just gotten off the plane. You could have just unpacked your bag. It doesn’t matter. You’ll get in the car, put on some music, start to drive, and realize you’re not doing to see something new. You’re not going to see something exciting or relaxing. This is just a regular old drive to run errands or pick up groceries. It’s not one of those special drives down a winding road laden with purpose and anticipation. It’s just a regular day. And on that regular day you begin to crave adventure again.

“We have built no national temples but the Capitol; we consult no common oracle but the Constitution.” - Representative Rufus Choate, 1833
:
:
#onthisday, September 17th, in 1787, the American experiment in enlightened government took a major step forward and a united government was formed. This new unified government simultaneously compounded and compromised the power of the 13 states that had once been colonies and had been separate governments. Although the constitution that was formed at that time had deep flaws in it, and supported existing power structures and social, racial, and gendered hegemony and unbalanced hierarchy, the crux of the idea behind the new United States was compromise and change. The Constitution was only ratified if it could be changed and amended leading to the unlimited potential for growth and betterment of the people that maintain the government. The fundamental principle is still with us today. And may it always be so. May we always grow and change to meet the times we are in.

This picture was snapped in The Giant Forest as we finished a hike through The House and Senate groves and the sunset coupled with the massive trees felt like an appropriate send off and finale to an amazing day. #takeahike #takeahikeday #nationaltakeahikeday

I usually say Everglades National Park is the hardest national park to photograph in. I don’t resent it for that; I respect it. The Everglades is subtle. The Everglades is challenging. High sawgrass prevents you from getting a glimpse of the landscape, save for at specific “windows” or gaps in the brush. The animals can be rare and taciturn.
This weekend, however? Easy.
I can’t believe I got this shot.
The heron didn’t fly off.
The sun and clouds cooperated.
The trees were perfectly lit.
This is EXACTLY what The Everglades is.
This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on seas and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.

You know what’s fun about FLICKR? Getting to revisit old photos and old destinations so you can bring them into your gallery. Here’s Bryce back in December- the snowiest December the park had in 10 years, according to rangers. I was delighted by this. I don’t think I’m ever going to get over the fact that I saw this in person. The moment was perfect. The sun came out. The snow kept falling. The colors of the canyon became more and more vibrant and everything glittered under the snow and ice. Perfection.

A glittering and babbling stream, cutting its way through a perfectly green and lush meadow. An exacting wall of evergreens defining the horizon. A snow graced volcano reaching up to a glowing and spangled sky. Lassen is the perfect example of the picture book perfection and sublimity found in a National Park.
#NPS107 - Happy Founders Day! The Organic Act became law #onthisday in 1916 formally creating the National Park Service.
What to say about our favorite government agency on this, its 107th anniversary?
Happy 107th anniversary!

“The redwoods, once seen, leave a mark or create a vision that stays with you always. No one has ever successfully painted or photographed a redwood tree. The feeling they produce is not transferable. From them comes silence and awe. It's not only their unbelievable stature, nor the color which seems to shift and vary under your eyes, no, they are not like any trees we know, they are ambassadors from another time.” - John Steinbeck

#onthisday in 1919, 104 years ago, Grand Canyon National Park was established. Although it had previously been a National Monument, and even in spite of its sublime beauty and scale, conservationists fought an uphill battle to safeguard this iconic segment of the American landscape. Locals wanted Arizona to manage the land. They wanted to mine it. They wanted to make it a tourist trap, akin to Niagara Falls. These myopic instances have always amused me but they really reveal the necessity of the National Park Service and the function of a National Park; to save the best of our land, the best of our history for ourselves and sometimes, from ourselves. Today, The Grand Canyon is the second-most visited National Park next to Great Smoky Mountains and perhaps one of the most emblematic of the National Park endeavor.
To me? The Grand Canyon (and Petrified Forest) were my first National Parks outside of Florida. As a small child, my parents took me up and down the East Coast of the US to see all the historical NPS units, but at the ripe old age of 10, they took me to Arizona for my first taste of western wilderness. I often say that my life was never the same after visiting certain National Parks, and The Grand Canyon is one of those parks. Seeing the deepest canyon on earth and marveling at rock that was 1.8 billion years old fundamentally changed my outlook on nature. And, the rest, of course, is history.

It’s #WaterfallWednesday and now that I’ve been home and was able to access @lightroom to fully stitch together shots of #jacksonfalls, I’m excited to show off how cool and secluded and hidden this fall is. Tucked away in a small gorge off the Natchez Trace Parkway, Jackson Falls is a branch of the Duck River and is a sculpted cascade down a 900 foot steep path that descends from the parkway into the gorge itself. While the main part of the falls is at the end of the trail, a whole sheet of water precedes them and cascades down to form the base of the fall which is seen here. With the rocks and trees of the gorge stretching above, the whole environment feels like a walled garden with a spectacular fountain at its center.

Can we make #tectonictuesday a thing? Let’s make #tectonictuesday a thing. Pinnacles is a revelation. Spires and mountains of rock moved by tectonic plates? Probably one of the coolest geological concepts I’ve ever encountered. And, easily, one of the most strangely beautiful and stark environments I’ve ever hiked through. Pinnacles has the best parts of Joshua Tree, Craters of the Moon, and other desert and chaparral parks all rolled into one.

Obsessed. I’m obsessed with editing the pictures from this moment of the trip; I’ve had these pictures open in Lightroom since I downloaded the RAW files to my desktop, I’ve created several different versions of this picture, and I’ve made composite images of the scene, trying to exactly replicate how beautiful the light streamed through the trees, how sharp the sequoia needles were against the bright sky, and the overall sublime mood of sunset in Round Meadow in early august. This was my probably the most beautiful moment of the entire trip. It was our first glorious day back in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. After a year of waiting to be back, the park glittered in all its splendor to welcome us back. How could I not be obsessed with this moment and want to capture it and preserve it? Especially when it looks like we stepped into a WPA poster? It was a perfect moment.

Captured from above: Montrose Beach blanketed in snow, with the serene hook embracing the glistening shoreline, all set against the breathtaking skyline at sunrise. A winter wonderland in the heart of the city!
Category: Single/Stacked (sort of? I'll explain)
STORY:
I had planned a photo down in Quechee, Vermont with the Milky Rising over the gorge, but I was too early and didn't have the energy or motivation to wait 3 hours. I also live about 2 hours away, so I decided to try and capture the Milky Way rising over the bridge. I couldn't believe how much traffic came through at 11:30 pm EST. This was my favorite shot of the light trails crossing the bridge. This is a single frame, but as I was editing the photo in Lightroom I saved multiple edits. I liked the last 5 edits and blended them together in PS to get blend the golden core and the faded bluish night sky. So that's why I added "stacked" as a category even though it's the same still frame.
I think I'll go back in a few months to try and get the shot I had originally planned.

Day two in Yosemite was stellar. Literally. Had an amazing day darting around the valley chasing the light and hiking around Mirror Lake and then a fantastic time with my friend, Patrick, catching up and attempting Astrophotography. Patrick can attest to how absolutely blown away I was with the view of the cosmos from Tunnel View. It’s possible to see the stars to this degree in Miami, but there’s something so grand and mysterious and downright beautiful about seeing mountains and stars and the Milky Way all in one amazing vista. I think there was a period of about 5 minutes where I couldn’t take any pictures but just had to stare up at the sky and take it all in. It was a beautiful night and a beautiful moment.

59 years ago, today, we heard the prophetic words of Dr. King.
He had a dream.
Some parts of the dream have come true.
Others have not.
Our journey continues.
:
:
"I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”
:
:
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
:
:
If America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!
But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, when we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last."

Portraits of past Texas governors and a unique baluster occupy the third level of the Texas State Capitol in Austin.
I am so excited to make it to NYC for the latter half of the infamous Manhattanhenge sunset! I missed the "full sunset" which happens earlier on July 11th. So I got the "half sunset". I learned about this after stumbling on a YouTube Livestream by Neil Degrasse Tyson on Startalk earlier this year. Here is my time lapse of the sunset on July 14, 2022 looking down 42nd Street from the Tudor City Overpass. This phenomena happens twice a year: full sunset happens around May 30th and July 11 and a half sunset happens the days following. The reason it's a "half sunset" is because the lower half of the sun sets behind New Jersey. Due to the street grid layout of Manhattan, you can see the sunset along all the crossroads going east-west. Some of the best viewing locations are: 57th Street 42nd Street 34th Street 23rd Street 14th Street Tudor City Overpass, Manhattan Hunter's Point South Park The Overpass is the most convenient location to view the sunset because there's a sidewalk for pedestrians. I photographed the half sunset version on July 13th when I first arrived, and then went back on July 14th since I was in the area. I am so grateful that I retook the photos because the ones from the 13th did not come out the way I wanted. I hope to come back next year on May 29th for the full sunset. All 4 photos were taken with the same settings below: EXIF: Canon EOSR RF 24-105mm shot at 105mm ISO 200 F/7.1 1/500
I made my way up to Foster Bridge last night for the moon rise and got caught in the rain. I was worried about the water damage to my drone and phone, and in my panic I didn't quite get the other half of the rainbow. The foreground in the first photo is a bit distorted, and I tried my best to correct that distortion in post without losing too much of the scene. I think both came out nicely. Hopefully I can get up there again for a full rainbow photo op.
