Near Rollinsville, Colorado - This image is a result of my latest drive for sanity that took me right up to the Continental Divide by traveling a rough 4-wheel drive road that is actually an old railroad grade used before they cut a tunnel through the mountains. The white mountain in the background is James Peak. Spectacular day!
On our way back from exploring today, we took a four-wheel drive through Yankee Basin outside of Ouray. It was another great drive with amazing views all along the way. There is a stream next to the road that also gave us some nice waterfall opportunities. We read online before we came on the trip that July is the best month to see wildflowers in the mountains. Boy were they right. The mountains were full of colorful flowers on every trail we went on during this trip. There are so many areas to explore around Silverton and Ouray. I can't wait until my next trip back.

Memorial in Cavendish Cemetery to the American and Maritime sailors lost during the Yankee Gale in October 1851. The worst marine disaster in the history of Prince Edward Island.
The 4WD trail to Yankee Boy Basin was quite the challenge. I was kinda proud of myself and Wanda (my 4Runner) when we made it all the way to the top.
The payoff was the wildflowers were blooming and the light softened on and off for us. Overall, lots of fun.
In 2016, the Yankee Lady was about to perform at an Air Show. Unfortunately, the Yankee Lady is no longer flying after being grounded by the FAA over a wing issue.
I saw her fly many times, and she was a glory to behold in the air. It's hard to believe that there are only 4 flyable B-17G's left, but we can still admire them even if they are on the ground. These incredible machines played a key role in World War II, helping to ensure an Allied victory against oppressors.

Winter has arrived and finally some clear skies – my initial attempt around the huts at the far end of Namadgi National Park was clouded out so a quick visit to Yankee Hat (Plan B) provided a beautifully clear night sky. The area was pitch black and the shot includes two images, a sky shot and a five-minute exposure of the ground. I also noticed later when editing these images, a small meteor shower was active through the Milky Way core but its not visible in this image. The temperature around 7 pm was also minus 2 which explains why my hands were freezing, Namadgi National Park, Australia.

This shot gives an idea of the multitude and variety of inscriptions left in the Froidmont quarry, on the Chemin des Dames in northern France. The quarry was nicknamed "Creute des Yankees" or the "Yankee cave" after the 26th US "Yankee Division" that was sheltering here in early 1918.
Some thousand inscriptions were made in the six weeks that the American soldiers stayed here. Some left their names, others the symbols of units or civilian fraternal organisations they belonged to, still others an image of their girlfriend, and much more. This panel contains one of the few examples of enmity: the orange skull bears the words "Boche Kultur" ("Boche" was the pejorative term for Germans).
In all cases, soldiers felt the need to keep themselves occupied under some of the most stressful of situations imaginable and with the ever-present fear of dying or of being forgotten. Interestingly, they didn't destroy the inscriptions from previous occupants, no matter which side they belonged to. For many these carvings meant the "I was here. I did my job" expression. For some these were the last words they ever wrote.

This silver mine was discovered in 1882 and remained open till the early 1900's. It is located in the Red Mountain Townsite area and can be seen from the Million Dollar Highway when you see a trestle beside the road.
