Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Birma)

'Golden Dagon Pagoda and also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda, is a gilded stupa located in Yangon, Myanmar. The Shwedagon is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in the Thuwanabumi, Southpart of Myanmar, as it is believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas of the present kalpa.

Shwedagon Paya was originally built by a Mon king when Yangon, Dagon at that time, was part of his kingdom. Mon used to control the southern half of present-day Myanmar as well as some part of Thailand.

Yangon was taken over by the Konbaung dynasty from the north in 1755. It was ceded to the British in 1852 and became the administrative and commercial centre of British Burma. It became the capital of independent Myanmar in 1948 and ceded the status to Naypyidaw in 2006.

Mon kingdom is supposed to have been Suvarnabhumi (meaning golden land) as described in Indian and Sri Lankan records as well as Ptolemy's Trans-Gangetic India. Mon culture provided the basis for the culture of Myanmar and probably that of Thailand as well. Shwedagon Paya would be regarded as a witness of the Mon influence on Myanmar. Mon kingdom and their language survive as the Mon State in Myanmar in a reduced scale.

Yangon / Myanmar is in the world headline last few weeks. Mostly bad news..... I took a looks at those snaps I took during the trip. The city then was filled with life. Hope this country will overcome the current challenge.

Myanmar’s Shwedagon Pagoda is a 114-acre Buddhist complex in the heart of Yangon and dominates the capital's skyline. This 112m (367ft) golden, gilded stupa sits atop the 51m (168 ft) Singuttara Hill and can be seen from anywhere throughout the city.

At nearly 2,600 years old, Shwedagon has the distinction of not just being the world’s oldest pagoda, it also lays claim to being the world’s most expensive. The central stupa alone is plated with over 20,000 bars of gold.

Le stupa central est couvert de près de 9000 plaques en or massif, soit quelques 6 tonnes d’or, auxquelles s’ajoutent les millions de feuilles d’or apposées avec ferveur.

Vehicles form light trails during blue hour around the Sule pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar.

The Sule Pagoda, a revered landmark in Yangon, Myanmar, has a rich history dating back over 2,600 years. Originally a Mon structure, it was later incorporated into Yangon by King Okkalapa. Sule Pagoda has stood witness to the city's evolution, from ancient times to colonial rule and modernity. Its significance goes beyond religious worship; it's a cultural icon, a gathering place, and a symbol of unity. Surrounded by bustling streets, the pagoda remains a spiritual and historical anchor in the heart of Yangon, reflecting the enduring legacy of Myanmar's cultural heritage.

Yangon (formerly Rangoon) is the capital of the Yangon Region of Myanmar. Founded in the early 11th century by the Mon people, the city became the capital of the country under British rule following three Anglo-Burmese wars (1824-1826, 1852-1853, and 1885). It remained the capital after independence from the British was acheived in 1948. The capital was moved to Naypyidaw some 330 km (205 mi.) to the north in 2006.

The Shwedagon Pagoda is 112 m (367.5 ft.) tall and lies atop Singuttara Hill in Yangon. It is the most sacred Pagoda in Myanmar. In 2018, the pagoda was added to the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites. The submission states: "According to legend, the Shwedagon Pagoda was constructed more than 2,600 years ago, which would make it the oldest Buddhist stupa in the world. Currently scholarly research by historians and archaeologists indicate that the pagoda was first built between the 6th and 10th centuries AD." and "According to local chronologies dating from the 14th century CE, the Shwedagon is believed to enshrine the bodily relics of the historical Buddha, Gautama, as well as artifactual relics purported by long tradition to be associated with the three other most recent previous Buddhas of our present era (kalpa). The enshrined relics include: eight strands of hair from the head of Gautama Buddha, as well as a piece of the robe believed to have belonged to Kassapa Buddha, a water filter attributed to Konagamana Buddha, and the staff of Kakusandha Buddha." The crown at the top of the stupa is decorated with 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies. A 76-carat diamond is set at the highest point of the stupa.
