Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Birma)
'Golden Dagon Pagoda and also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda, is a gilded stupa located in Yangon, Myanmar. The Shwedagon is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in the Thuwanabumi, Southpart of Myanmar, as it is believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas of the present kalpa.
Shwedagon Paya was originally built by a Mon king when Yangon, Dagon at that time, was part of his kingdom. Mon used to control the southern half of present-day Myanmar as well as some part of Thailand.
Yangon was taken over by the Konbaung dynasty from the north in 1755. It was ceded to the British in 1852 and became the administrative and commercial centre of British Burma. It became the capital of independent Myanmar in 1948 and ceded the status to Naypyidaw in 2006.
Mon kingdom is supposed to have been Suvarnabhumi (meaning golden land) as described in Indian and Sri Lankan records as well as Ptolemy's Trans-Gangetic India. Mon culture provided the basis for the culture of Myanmar and probably that of Thailand as well. Shwedagon Paya would be regarded as a witness of the Mon influence on Myanmar. Mon kingdom and their language survive as the Mon State in Myanmar in a reduced scale.
Myanmar’s Shwedagon Pagoda is a 114-acre Buddhist complex in the heart of Yangon and dominates the capital's skyline. This 112m (367ft) golden, gilded stupa sits atop the 51m (168 ft) Singuttara Hill and can be seen from anywhere throughout the city.
At nearly 2,600 years old, Shwedagon has the distinction of not just being the world’s oldest pagoda, it also lays claim to being the world’s most expensive. The central stupa alone is plated with over 20,000 bars of gold.
Le stupa central est couvert de près de 9000 plaques en or massif, soit quelques 6 tonnes d’or, auxquelles s’ajoutent les millions de feuilles d’or apposées avec ferveur.
