The Saunders-Roe SR.53 was a British prototype interceptor aircraft of mixed jet and rocket propulsion developed for the Royal Air Force by Saunders-Roe in the early 1950s. Two prototypes flew a total of 56 test flights, with Mach 1.33 speeds being obtained. While testing at RAF Boscombe Down, XD151 crashed on 5 June 1958 during an aborted takeoff on its 12th flight. The project was cancelled on 29 July 1960, with the third prototype (XD153) never built.

At BrickFair Va 2019, where I was displaying Cold War models as part of a collaboration, we started discussing what to do for the 2020 event. My X-29 (front and centre in this picture) prompted the idea to build experimental military models. I started building my models for the collaboration in February, with my Sukhoi S-37, at a time when COVID-19 seemed to be something happening in Asia. I subsequently built the YF-23 and X-47, even though it seemed less and less likely that the event would take place, due to the developing pandemic, and indeed, it was cancelled. The hope now is that I will be able to travel to the US next year and that we will have our collaboration then, so I continued building, adding the British Aerospace EAP and lastly my M-21 Blackbird/ D-21 Tagboard.
The Bristol Type 188 is a supersonic research aircraft designed and produced by the British aircraft manufacturer Bristol Aeroplane Company. It was nicknamed the Flaming Pencil. Across 51 flights, the Type 188 reached a top speed of Mach 1.88 (1,440 mph : 2,300 km/h) at 36,000 ft (11,000 m). The longest subsonic flight lasted only 48 minutes, which was largely due to 70 percent of the aircraft's total fuel capacity being consumed just to attain its operational altitude. XF926 was dismantled and moved to RAF Cosford (without its engines) to act as instructional airframe 8368M, and is preserved at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford in Shropshire.

LIGHT ON TWO SIDES
When they have a choice, people will always gravitate to those rooms which have light on two sides, and leave the rooms which are lit only from one side unused and empty.
Therefore:
Locate each room so that it has outdoor space outside it on at least two sides, and then place windows in these outdoor walls so that natural light falls into every room from more than one direction.
The importance of this pattern lies partly in the social atmosphere it creates in the room. Rooms lit on two sides, with natural light, create less glare around people and objects; this lets us see things more intricately; and most important, it allows us to read in detail the minute expressions that flash across people's faces, the motion of their hands . . . and thereby understand, more clearly, the meaning they are after. The light on two sides allows people to understand each other.
In a room lit on only one side, the light gradient on the walls and floors inside the room is very steep, so that the part furthest from the window is uncomfortably dark, compared with the part near the window. Even worse, since there is little reflected light on the room's inner surfaces, the interior wall immediately next to the window is usually dark, creating discomfort and glare against this light. In rooms lit on one side, the glare which surrounds people's faces prevents people from understanding one another.
Experiments with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been ongoing for decades and UAVs have found a niche role for certain "dull, dirty and dangerous" tasks. Despite promising developments, however, they are not yet a substitute for manned combat aircraft. For the US Navy, a particular challenge is operating UAVs from aircraft carriers. This was investigated using the Northrop Grumman X-47B experimental UAV, which wa sthe first UAV to perform autonomous carrier landings and take-offs during three test campaigns between 2012 and 2014.
The Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) XC-142 was a tri-service tiltwing experimental aircraft designed to investigate the operational suitability of vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) transports. An XC-142A first flew conventionally on 29 September 1964, and on 11 January 1965, it completed its first transitional flight by taking off vertically, changing to forward flight and finally landing vertically. Its service sponsors pulled out of the program one by one, and it eventually ended due to a lack of interest after demonstrating its capabilities successfully.
