A view from above. Everything in this city seems to have a sense of preciseness especially the block of buildings in the background!
Eleventh in a series of photos from Storm Eunice.
Thought I'd continue the series from Storm Eunice, as I still have a load of photos from that amazing day on the South Coast.
The Xi'an City Wall in Xi'an, Shaanxi, China, was built by the founder of the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Hongwu (ruled 1368 - 1398) between 1370 and 1378. The wall seen today incorporates Improvements made by the Qing Emperor Qianlong (ruled 1735-1796). With a length of 13.7 km, it encloses an area of 11.2 sq. km.
Cityscape from my hotel window in Xi'an, in the Shaanxi province of China. Unfortunately it was a city immersed in unhealthy smog., making the day appear gloomy,
The Bell Tower of Xi'an (simplified Chinese: 西安钟楼; traditional Chinese: 西安鐘樓; pinyin: Xī'ān Zhōnglóu), built in 1384 during the early Ming Dynasty, is a symbol of the city of Xi'an and one of the grandest of its kind in China. The Bell Tower also contains several large bronze-cast bells from the Tang Dynasty. The tower base is square and it covers an area of 1,377 m2 (14,820 sq ft). The tower is a brick and timber structure and close to 40 m (130 ft) high. It is located in the center of Xi'an, at the intersection of the four streets of the east, west, south and north. It is the largest and most preserved one amongst the many bell towers left over from ancient China.(Wikipedia)
« Et les morts, comme si les tombes s’étaient ouvertes, surgissaient invisiblement. Ils nous environnent dès que notre regard se pose avec amour sur une terre à l’antique culture, et tout comme leur héritage est vivant dans la pierre et le sillon, leur âme très ancienne est présente sur les terres et les campagnes. » (E.J.)

« J’ai pris la position du dormeur
et j’ai dormi
Évanouies l’exacte souffrance
l’anodine impuissance
Et maintenant l’automne me prodigue
l’infinie douceur de ses lumières dernières
ses fumées si peu indéchiffrables…
Un rouge-gorge rivalise avec le couchant
je me sens plein d’indulgence
pour les autos. »

« N’ayons pas peur surtout, chère Selma, chère Angélique : faisons confiance à la peur. À l’inhibition de tout un chacun. La sensation la mieux partagée du monde. Au réflexe automatique de repli devant toute menace de liberté, d’autonomie. » (P.M.)

The Hui are a Sunni Muslim minority in China, many of whom live in the Beiyuanmen neighborhood inside the Xi'an City Wall in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. I photographed this Hui woman cooking halal food at her food stall on Beiyuanmen Islamic Street, a popular attraction in the neighborhood.

« Elles résistaient à la poussée de l’eau, supportaient le passage des convois ferroviaires galopant vers l’ailleurs, essuyaient, sans faiblir, le chaud et le froid, la pluie, les jours et les nuits. » (P.B.)
