Used to draw a lot of pencil sketches as a kid but when you get older the world tells you to phase out of artistic thinking and play a microscopic role in society.

The writing table on which classic novelist Jane Austen produced so much great work, at her home in Chawton, Hampshire, England. Jane lived here from 1809 to 1817, only moving out for a few short months near the end of her life when her final illness made it necessary to be close to her doctor in nearby Winchester.

It was on this simple little desk that Jane revised both Sense and Sensibility, which was published in 1811 (making Jane all of £140), and Pride and Prejudice, published in 1813. Mansfield Park followed in 1814, with Emma in 1815. Persuasion was completed in 1816 but not published until 1818, a year after her death at the age of 41. She was in the process of writing Sanditon when she died and it was never finished.

Nearby is a door which, to this day, still has a squeak when opened. Back in the early-19th century, novel writing was considered somewhat unseemly for a female - all Jane's novels which appeared during her lifetime were published anonymously, merely bearing the legend 'By a Lady', which was not uncommon at the time - so Jane had the door deliberately left un-oiled, as an early warning alarm so she could conceal her writing if anybody approached.

As a fellow writer in the 21st century world of laptops, internet research and telephone interviews, it's quite humbling to stand in front of such a tiny, plain and unpretentious table and know so much wonderful literature has emanated from it. Totally magical. If I could choose to own any piece of furniture in the world, then this would be it...

Das schönste ist, auf dem Schreibtisch zwischen den ganzen Gegenständen zu schnurren.

This desk was made in plastic laminates and "Straticolour" which is a kind of multi layered plastic laminate with different coloured laminations which are visible when you cut into it. This effect is the cause of the red that you see in the photo. The idea was that the whole thing should slot together and in this sense it was successful because it is totally flat pack. The two boxes on each end lift up for storage and the central table portion also has a flap for storing paper underneath. The visual form of the piece was inspired a little, by the Transporter bridge in Newport, South Wales. Most of the pieces were cut out with a bandsaw then pattern routed against templates on an overhead router. Making this was the scariest thing I have ever made, given that you push the pieces against the pin on the router inches away from your fingers. Never again.

The Hôtel de Varengeville, at 217, boulevard Saint-Germain, was built in 1704 by the architect Jacques Gabriel (1667-1742) for Charlotte-Angélique Courtin, the widowed comtesse de Varengeville. She left it to her daughter, who sold it in 1736 to Marie-Marguerite d'Allegre, comtesse de Ruppelmonde (d. 1752). The comtesse had the room decorated in something like its present Louis Quinze style. The most distinctive feature of the room is the elaborate gilded boiserie or woodwork, attributed to Nicolas Pineau (1684-1754). The paneling is vigorously carved with C-scrolls, S-scrolls, fantastic stork-like birds, palmettes, foliage sprays, and even bats' wings. The Rococo style offers early evidence of the influence of Asian art. Chinoiserie is evident in the gilded ornamentation of the scarlet and gold japanned writing table. This table was made for Louis XV in 1759 by the royal cabinetmaker Gilles Joubert. Conventional aristocratic taste in boiserie form is suggested by the allegories of the seasons and representations of Music, Poetry, Gardening, Hunting, and Commerce.

The Ford/Edison Estates may be toured in Fort Myers, Florida, for a small fee. It is well worth a visit.

Jane Austen's House Museum

A small private museum. It occupies the 18th-century house in which novelist Jane Austen spent the last eight years of her life.

She wrote Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion in the small dining room of this house.

The museum has been a Grade I listed building since 1963.

The Dining Room

Some of Jane Austen's most famous works were written on this tiny, 12-sided walnut table by a window in this room. It was here that she most likely made her revisions of Sense and Sensibility, edited proofs of Pride and Prejudice and wrote Emma, Mansfield Park and Persuasion.

She wrote on small sheets of paper, easily hidden away when visitors appeared. According to family stories, she refused to allow the squeaky hinges on a door to be oiled because the squeaking alerted her that someone was coming.

Reading novels was not considered as respectable and worthy as other sorts of books but the Austens were a family of novel readers and encouraged Jane's writing.

Her first book was published as being written "By a Lady." Subsequent books appeared under the by line of "By the author of..." naming a previous work. None of her books appeared under her own name in her lifetime.

I bet they had little atomizers filled with testosterone they'd spritz you with as you entered this department. You had to wrestle a bear to get back to the shoe department.
