To write a paragraph about "How to Make an Omelet," students participated in a pre-writing activity with their third grade teacher, Mrs. Gina Dillard.

On the main road into the city

when the sun is low.

The traffic thickens, crawls.

It is a sluggish dragon glittering.

I am one of the dragon’s scales.

Suddenly the red sun is

right in the middle of the windscreen

streaming in.

I am transparent

and writing becomes visible

inside me

words in invisible ink

which appear

when the paper is held to the fire!

[from "Further In" by Tomas Tranströmer]

This visualization attempts to explain the writing process. We all start with planning, but when we move to the drafting stage, we diverge as writers and follow our own path, moving back and forth among the components such as coferring, rethinking, revising, editing, proofreading, and more plannning. Sometimes we will publish our work and sometimes we will not.

Extra-long twin

Siding the radiator.

Skin pressing against the

Metal gauge

Branding my left elbow;

Waking me from

Reminds me of the

Last time we made love.

There after it was

Hmm...Tim waiting for inspiration to strike.

If we publish on the Web, we then enter into a discussion with readers and may revise our writing further.

A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end, but not necessarily in that order.

My husband hung these signs all around the house to try and help me focus my attention back on my writing. And he did them in every color of the rainbow.

Write and edit your manuscript: Before you begin the self-publishing process, make sure your manuscript is complete and edited.

Design a cover: A great cover design can help attract readers to your book. You can hire a professional designer or create one yourself.

Choose a self-publishing platform: There are many self-publishing platforms available, such as Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing, Apple's iBooks, Barnes & Noble's Nook Press, and more. Research each platform to determine which is the best fit for your book.

Format your book: Each platform has specific formatting requirements, so make sure your manuscript is formatted correctly before uploading.

Set the price: Determine the price of your book based on its length, genre, and the competition.

Publish your book: Once you've completed the above steps, upload your book to your chosen platform and publish it.

Promote your book: Self-publishing also means self-promotion. Use social media, book reviews, and other marketing techniques to promote your book to potential readers.
