Seen loading at Keswick for the homeward journey to Newcastle was Wright Bros (of Nenthead, Alston Moor, Cumbria) Volvo B9R/Caetano Levante 2 (YY63 OEL). The 100 year old North Pennines based operator runs this summer only limited stage carriage service 888 over the Pennines from Newcastle and the Tyne Valley via Alston and Penrith to Keswick on the shores of Derwentwater. 2024 operation was limited to one round trip from Newcastle on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 19 July to 29 September so while this year’s season ends, let’s hope it will continue in 2025 and beyond as I would rather like to sample it myself.

Making a brief visit to Beamish Museum during their end of season steam weekend (7/8 October 2017) is this beautifully restored 1949 Crossley SD42/7 with it's Burlingham C33F coach body and 6 cylinder Crossley 48.6hp, 8.6-litre diesel engine and "crash" gearbox.
The coach, registered FUN 319 (Chassis No.97893), was new to Peters of Llanarmon in Denbighshire in April 1949. After passing through one other owner it was acquired by Wright Bros. of Nenthead in Upper Weardale in March 1959, and has remained in their ownership since that time. It is one of four similar Crossleys at one time owned by that company.
Wrights used this coach daily on their arduous Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Keswick route across the Pennines until it was withdrawn from service in March 1971. It was then parked up at the Nenthead garage until 1999 when a start was made at restoration, eventually completed in 2012.

With the same operator since new, Wright Bros.of Alston's Bedord/Elite III Express RRM915M is still in service, and the writer was able to have a run on it out to Ryton, during the NEBPT's Bus and Coach Rally, at the Gateshead MetroCentre, on May 6th 2012.

The Dennis Lancet chassis for half-cab bodies was briefly popular with North-East independents, but this fictional normal-control Dennis Falcon is without historical precedence. It is the type of one-man-operated bus that might have suited Wright Bros, had its more remote Upper Pennine routes lasted a little longer. The simple livery suits the body style well. Thanks again to David Little for the source image (16-Aug-12).

It isn't often that you can get a line-up of classic buses like this one in Beamish Museum, three very old girls and a slightly younger model!
On the left is CRN 80, a 1946 Leyland PS1 Tiger with East Lancs body, in the livery of Preston Corporation Transport Department and now owned by Cumbria Classic Coaches.
To it's right is FUN 319, a 1949 Crossley SD42/7 with a Burlingham C33F coach body, in the livery of - and owned by - Wright Bros. of Nenthead (Weardale)
Next is the younger 1960 AEC Routemaster WLT 378 (RM378), beautifully restored in it's London Transport livery and now owned by Weardale Motor Services.
Finally, on the far right, is probably the finest restoration I have ever seen. KUP 799 is a 1949 Albion Valiant CX39N with Associated Coachbuilders body in the livery of Economic of Whitburn (Wearside). It was restored and owned by Gardiners Coachbuilders of Spennymoor (co. Durham).
The buses were at Beamish Museum as part of their Pedal and Bus Power event on 24/25 March 2018.

This shot highlights the rear end, otherwise the view that intending passengers used to get when they had missed it!

This Burlingham bodied Crossley SD42-7 was originally new to Peters, Llanarman in 1949. The vehicle has been superbly restored by Wright Bros and is seen here in their livery arriving at the North East Bus Preservation Trust's 2013 MetroCentre Bus and Coach Rally, Gateshead.
Wright Bros. Crossley SD42-7/Burlingham FUN319 is a regular visitor to NE bus rallies, but has rarely been involved in passenger duties, so a run into Durham was especially welcome during the NEBPT's Vintage Bus Gathering at the Howlands Park & Ride site, on June 19th 2016.

FUN 319, a 1949 Crossley SD42, fitted with Burlingham bodywork, seen entering the site of The Royal Bus Rally in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, on 4th June 2012. It was new to Peters, Llanarman, and is now owned by Wright Bros, Nenthead. At present Class V tested, I believe that the plan is to gain a Class VI (PSV) MOT in the not too distant future. Another first class restoration job carried out by Gardiners Coachworks of Spennymoor.

Apparently the Waxwing Bag attracted as much attention as the bicycle did. Does this mean that your average parade attendee can relate more to beautiful luggage than to wooden wheels?
Wright Bros Plaxton Paramount 3200 bodied Volvo B10M NIL 9247 (ex-E 361 NEG) was new to Premier Travel, Cambridge )#361) and is pictured whilst parked in Blackpool. It later regained its original registration and was still in service in 2012, operating for Stephenson's of Easingwold, not bad for a 24 year old coach.
