"Soldier boy made of clay

Now an empty shell

Twenty one only son

But he served us well

Bred to kill not to care

Just do as we say

Finished here greeting death

He’s yours to take away" (Hetfield/Ulrich/Hammett)

This is a tank firing range the Nazis used under the 2.world war.

Unfortunately it was used as well for executing people.

The concrete walls are 10 meters high and the meaning was to hit the middle of the hole, 300 meters down the line.

I don't think there is many shooting ranges like this, at least not in Norway.

The first mass grave in Norway was found here.

Lots of history walking in the forest here, where you can see the gravestones and fresh flowers.

Operation Shingle (January 22, 1944), during the Italian Campaign of World War II, was an Allied amphibious landing against Axis forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno, Italy. The operation was commanded by Major General John P. Lucas and was intended to outflank German forces of the Winter Line and enable an attack on Rome. The resulting combat is commonly called the Battle of Anzio. (Read the article on wikipedia).

Unfortunately, this is only a very small part of the cemetery.

Approximately 20,000 Jews were brutally shot along the banks of the Danube River. The victims were forced to remove their shoes at gunpoint (shoes being a valuable commodity during World War II) and face their executioner before they were shot without mercy, falling over the edge to be washed away by the freezing waters.

Shoes on the Danube Promenade is a haunting tribute to this horrific time in history,

On 10 May 1940, Germany launched Fall Gelb, an invasion of the Low Countries. By attacking through the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium, the German Oberkommando der Wehrmacht believed that German forces could outflank the Maginot Line and then advance through southern Belgium and into northern France, cutting off the British Expeditionary Force and a large number of French forces and forcing the French government to surrender.[5] To gain access to northern France, German forces would have to defeat the armed forces of the Low Countries and either bypass or neutralize a number of defensive positions, primarily in Belgium and the Netherlands. Some of these defensive positions were only lightly defended and intended more as delaying positions than true defensive lines designed to stop an enemy attack.[5] However, a number of them were of a more permanent design, possessing considerable fortifications and garrisoned by significant numbers of troops. I wrote a few days ago that my photos from Amsterdam in September 2017 would be the last I would upload that were taken with the Fuji X–Pro 2... Well, I was wrong, as there are also photographs from our May 2018 trip to Verdun and the surrounding areas and all the very moving memories from The Great War that took place there, among other places...

Those were taken in May 2018, so obviously I still had my Fuji gear at that time.

On the day of our Annual Remembrance of the Dead, the Avro Lancaster PA474 overflew several places in the Netherlands and Belgium, where in the Second Worldwar planes were shot down.

Of the 7.377 Lancaster bombers that were build, only 17 are preserved and two of them are still in flying condition. The expected lifespan of these planes was 21 missions, it is not difficult to guess what this meant for the crews...

The 2018 Lincoln’s RAF100 1940’s weekend in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

The weekend was part of an annual event and a celebration of the RAF centenary. People across the city were treated to fly pasts from aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a firework display at night. Lincoln BIG's annual 1940s event featured live music, dance and vintage vehicle displays. The two celebrations were combined as part of a celebratory weekend.

Just before the end of the second worldwar the Nazi's made a mass grave in the woods of Ees (Drenthe). This mass grave is 25 by 3 meters and was ment for members of the resistance. Luckely it never came this far.
