On the 23rd of April is World Book and Copyright Day, a day of action for reading and for the rights of authors.
Larry and Bermione already celebrated on 4th March, which is celebrated in the UK and Ireland - but as we all know, two are better than one !
I just realized last night that it was world book day today so thought it a opportunity to upload a few pictures of Asha to commemorate this day. I didn't have the time to create something so just went looking for a few appropriate that would suit and what more appropriate than with her glasses on reading about psychic dogs...lol. World Book day is celebrated in the UK and Ireland the first Thursday of March every year. All school children are given a voucher to purchase a book to encourage children to read. Children also dress up as characters from a book to celebrate this day.
Happy World Book Day!

April 23 is also my birthday.
How the tradition of a red rose and a book became celebrated on April 23.
According to the legend, Sant Jordi killed a dragon to save a princess and then a bush of red roses sprouted from its spilled blood. Years later, on April 23, he was martyred for his religious beliefs. On Diada de Sant Jordi (the Feast Day of Saint Jordi), it is common to see rose stalls and red roses, the symbol of love, everywhere. Traditionally, men give a rose to their loved one. It is estimated that 40% of all the roses sold in a year in Barcelona are sold on this single day.
During the International Exhibition held in Barcelona in 1929, booksellers decided to set up stalls in the streets, to present their new Catalan publications and to encourage reading. The initiative was so successful they decided to change the date and establish 23rd April as Book Day, the day when two of the great names in the history of literature died: Cervantes and Shakespeare. In 1995, UNESCO’s General Assembly declared 23rd April World Book and Copyright Day.
It's world book day in the UK and Ireland, the first Thursday of the month of March. Every school child is given a voucher to purchase a book to encourage children to read. Children on this day dress up as a character from a book. Here is Asha dressed as Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean
This little mouse obviously wanted a big adventure today as he popped out at the bottom of the garden to listen to a tale! Made me smile and as it's World Book Day seemed very appropriate to post it today! Hope it gives you a smile too. (Not brilliant quality as through the window)

It's World Book Day on 5 March 2015 folks - yes I'd forgotten as well! - until I saw the letter from the school at the bottom of my daughter's school bag!
Around the world, children - with help from schools - will be getting excited about reading and literature.
For us parents, however, this comes with a slight challenge: what fancy costume - with a literary theme - to dress them in for school on World Book Day??!!
A books themed shot here of the library at Dunham Massey in Cheshire - the library dates back to the 18th century.
Luckily, the librarian had the book open, so it acted as a reflector in fill lighting her face.

Asha in character to mark World Book Day today 05/03/20
Just seen on the TV that it is world book day today and children are dressing up as characters from books. So I remember Asha in her wee Wonder Woman costume so thought I'd look up a picture to upload to mark this day.

Kalaam Baba Fareed Shakar Ganj, edited by Maqbool Anwar Daoudi, the collected Sufic Punjabi poetry of Baba Fareed.
I grew up knowing about Baba Fareed, as my father's family are serious devotees; they attend his mazaar at Pakpattan every year during the urs, and organise all kinds of gatherings in his name to collect money for charity, including qawaali meetings to which they would invite the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan every year in Lahore. Baba Fareed is renowned by Punjabi communities all around the world, and of all religions, particularly
by Muslims and Sikhs. And this post is especially for my Father.

#22 World Book Day for 116 pictures in 2016
I just received a box of wonderful books that belonged to my Uncle Bobby who passed away on 11/26/15. He had a PhD in Italian and was a brilliant man. I also have studied Italian post graduate so my cousin offered to give me his Italian book collection. I am very honored to have them. This is just some of them and I thought I would take a photo for World Book Day.
So, for the world book day theme I have chosen a B&W photo of some books by Gichin Funakoshi. Often referred to as the father of modern karate. He was among the first master who brought old style karate from Okinawa to mainland Japan in the 1920's. His legacy is Shotokan Karate, one of the most common styles of karate around the world and my number one passion.

Apparently today is World Book Day! This little rabbit is supposed to be the character from a book that I have never heard of, but there are so many books about rabbits, I don't suppose it matters too much!

Myrtle asked me if I could take a shot of us reading together in an unusual location. It's World Book Day on March 5th and she has to take a photo to school for the Extreme Reading Challenge. I don't hold out any hope of winning, as our loft isn't exactly an "extreme" location, but it was fun to set up and shoot.

One SB-800 on the floor behind us, fired up against the back wall. I wanted to get a load of texture out of those 100 year old bricks. Another SB-800 in the fold of the book with it's little plastic diffuser on. It was pointed at the page rather than at our faces to make a slightly softer light. Flashes triggered using another SB-800 on-camera, pointed straight up at the (almost black) roof. This added a little ambient light. My batteries were shot in my usual triggering device, so I used the old-school SU-4 mode instead, where the flashes just react to light. It means scrabbling around changing the flash power on each unit manually, but works a treat!
Camera triggered by infrared thingy.

Studio 26 - Favorite shot of 2016 that was NOT part of a Studio 26 assignment
It had to be this one, this one has many personal meanings for me. This is the last photo I've taken of Buzz in his series of "adventures". It marks the end of Buzz's career as my model. It marks the end of my photographic creativity (hopefully not forever, but certainly for the time being). It is the end of an era for me.
Here is a link to my favorite Non-Studio 26 photos from group members.

I do love books. I am, and always have been, an avid reader. My earliest memories are of my mother reading to me at bedtime, and then later, she and I reading together.
The Little Prince - this one is special to me. My sister is 11 years older than I, so we did not have a lot of common experiences growing up. But I do remember that she gave me this book - and I loved it. This is still the same copy that she gave me so many years ago.
I am delighted that Buzz is reading to Gracie. The peacefulness and wide-eyed wonderment that comes from reading can only help her - and all of us - as we grow and learn.
