Way back in 1969 I had the desire to visit some parts of Africa on my own.
I was quite fortunate to find a skipper who took me from Hamburg, Germany to Durban, South Africa as a so called workaway.
My jobs:- Scrubbing the planks and helping in the kitchen.
One thing I´ll never forget:- The seamen had to remind me to make stronger coffee and much weaker teas. Been young and unexperienced I often goofed it up.
After three weeks on MS Kaapland, back on shore I was ready to roam southern Africa.
A life time experience!
The most spoilt cat you'll ever meet in your life. Princess is one of the animals I met during my workaway stay i Kenmore, ON.
Blue hour in Black Creek, BC. I recently browsed through some of my travel photos again and found this shot that I had completely missed before.
This young rescue crow was quite the character and would hop after you and tug at your shoe laces to get attention and/or food. He sadly did not make it in the end, due to an injured wing that just wouldn't heal properly.
This charming little lady is Pippi - a border collie in the Canadian Rockies. Don't you just want to boop that nose?
Old and grey, but the best part of her day was when we came running to take her for a walk. She became a puppy again for a short while. She would run a few meters with us, happy as could be, before having to slow down. Because of her old age we couldn't walk very far but it was amazing to see the happiness in her eyes.
Pippi LOVED playing fetch. She would play until she could barely walk - then she'd keep going. I think this face says it all.
Princess decided to join me in bed one morning and I caught her in the beautiful winter light from the window.
I met Dharma during my travels on Vancouver Island. Her excitement at the possibility of a stick being thrown was a joy to watch and photograph!

Arrived last night at my next workaway. This will be my accommodation for the next month. The sky here is so clear and beautiful and, as you can see, there is minimal light pollution.

We live on an acreage property with a rainforest arboretum which does require constant work - mulching, planting, pruning, mowing, whipper snippering, weed eradication and a lot of chain saw work, especially after storms.
In order that we can keep on top of things many years ago we joined an organisation called Help Exchange, HelpX for short.
HelpX is a bit like WWoofers but perhaps with a broader charter which allows mostly unskilled people opportunity to have short stays where they can undertake a whole range of tasks related to household and property maintenance.
The usual requirement is 3-5 hours of work per day in return for accommodation and food. We usually show our guests around the area in their non-work time.
We've indeed been fortunate to have had some of the nicest young people you'd ever want to meet stay with us, usually for just a week, though longer stays are possible with many HelpX hosts.
Most of our recent guests have been French university students interspersed with other nationalities from time to time. We can honestly say we have been unbelievably impressed with the respectfullness, trustworthiness, diligence, manners and individual personality of almost every guest we have ever had.
If you've followed my photostream you will be aware that we travel a lot. This has enabled us to catch up again, particularly in Europe, with several of our former HelpX guests, sometimes years after they leave Australia.
The cultural exchange for us is every bit as valuable as the work component of a HelpX stay as most foreign language speakers we have stay with us are here in Australia to improve their English. We've never had a problem communicating even though we don't speak a second language.
Nevertheless, sometimes the communication barrier presents an occasional humorous and rarely, a not so humorous moment. For example, when you send a HelpX worker to the shed to get a wheelbarrow and they come back with a rake or when you ask them to prune a bush and they prune it to the ground.
In every case though the incorrect performance of the task is innocent and needs to be viewed from the context of our role as educators.
Our guests always seem to enjoy their stay with us, if the references they write on our profile are any indication, and the same goes for us. We're often very sad when they move on to their next host but, as any good parent knows, kids have to go out and take the opportunity of new life experiences, so we gratefully say goodby and wish them well in their travels and in their future lives.
Just one final point. Many helpX hosts are just suburban mums and dads with young kids and pets. You don't need to be on a bigger property to enjoy the benefits of a cultural HelpX exchange.
The young man in the image above is Romain from France, a great worker and just an all-round nice guy. Romain was with us for a week in early November 2022.
He had just completed a degree in Business Marketing back home in France before arriving in Australia and was using HelpX to save money, gain new experiences and to improve his English.
There are a few organizations similar to HelpX.
Others include WWoofers (World Wide Opportunities on
Organic Farms), Workaway and Worldpackers.
All these require work in return for accommodation and in most cases provision of food can be negotiated.
A couple of others providing free accommodation but not food include Global Freeloaders and Couch Surfing.

I have the luxury of having a desk in my room at my current work away. I thought I may as well make the most of it instead of always using my laptop on top of myself in bed.

Cove 19 was created as a result of the very serious drought and bushfires that occurred in NSW in September, October, November and December of 2019.
The area had been planted out with Bangalow Palms 15 to 20 years prior but almost all of them died in the drought, leaving a mass of dead and dry fronds on each palm, not to mention other trees that had also died or were close to death as a result of the long drought.
The drought finally broke with reasonable rain on 8th January 2020, with good follow-up rain soon after.
Fearing that drought might return or continue into the following spring it was decided that burning the dead fronds and trunks was essential in order to reduce the volume of dry vegetative fuel on the ground.
From March 2020 we started a program of cutting down the dead Bangalow Palms. Some were taken to the council tip but this became cost prohibitive so burning was decided upon. With all the palms cut down we went looking for a suitable place to conduct the burning close to the site.
This site shown here in this photo was selected.
We had many nights around the fires and gradually reduced the fuel load substantially.
This burning operation coincided with Covid 19 arriving in Australia and eventually the NSW Government established rules which codified non-contact with people outside your own family group.
Our friends and neighbours would see the fire at night and would sneek over with a bottle of red and despite the strict no contact restrictions we would often sit around the fire and discuss world events among other things, all socially distanced of course.
We achieved what was necessary and throughout March of 2020 a new planting program commenced and this time we planted hardy subtropical and dry rainforest tree species.
With the area where we burned now relatively cleared it was decided that the area be thereafter known as Cove 19. From our conversations other names arose for the circular track that passes Cove 19 as well as the forest in this part of the property. With Trump in power in the USA daily sprooking conspiracy theories it was decided that the forest be named the 'Forest of Conspiracy' and the circular track, 'Fake News Loop'.
Over the years 2021-2-3-4 and 2025 small progress was made toward preparing to pave this area, now known as Cove 19. Lots of planting of rainforest trees since 2020 had paid dividends and the area was taking shape nicely.
In early 2025 we acquired access to a source of free concrete pavers and this spurred the paving project along with its eventual completion in June of 2025.
With five years of excellent rainfall the trees planted in the first half of 2020 have now really put on height and the entire area is now covered with dense rainforest vegetation.
A visiting friend saw an opportunity to use an old satelite dish he had lying around and offered to build a shade umbrella from it. It was added in early June 2025 resulting in the whole project being finalised and looking great.
We still have some landscaping to complete but hopefully that will be finished in the next few weeks ie. by the end of June 2025.
