The Benz Velo was introduced by Karl Benz in 1894 as the followup to the Patent Motorwagen. The Velo and the Duryea Motor Wagon, patented in 1895, are credited as the first standardized cars. 67 Benz Velos were built in 1894 and 134 in 1895. The early Velo had a 1L 1.5 hp engine and later a 3 hp engine giving a top speed of 19 km/h. The Velo was officially introduced by Karl Benz as the Velocipede, and became the world's first large-scale production car. The Velocipede remained in production between 1894 and 1902, with a final count of over 1,200 produced. It was the first car introduced to South-Africa and was demonstrated to then President Paul Kruger on 4 January 1897.

PRECEDING EVENTS

Karl Benz patented the world's first stationary, static Internal combustion engine. His patent created a great demand for his vehicles, forcing Benz to move his operations in 1886 to a new factory on Waldhofstrasse in Mannheim (operating until 1908). Benz had appointed a Board of Management to help aid his growing company. These appointees suggested to Benz that he should create a less-expensive automobile suitable for mass-production. In response, Benz engineered a two-passenger automobile with a 3-horsepower engine, which he called the Victoria. This preceding model could reach a top speed of 11 miles per hour, and utilized a pivotal front-axle operated by a roller-chained tiller for steering. 85 units of the Victoria were produced. Improving on these designs, Benz created his Benz Velo.

FOLLOWING AUTOMOBILES

The Velo also inspired numerous copies, including Marshall (later Belsize) in Manchester, Star (Wolverhampton), and Arnold (Paddock Wood, of which only twelve were built). Benz's Velo was particularly popular in France, where a Parisian bicycle manufacturer by the name of Émile Roger had been building Benz engines under license from Karl Benz. Roger began building Benz automobiles as well, and as a result, a majority of Benz automobiles were sold in France initially. Many British Inventors also used Benz's patents and automobiles as starting points for their own innovations. Frederick W. Lanchester, of Birmingham, built a four-wheeled petrol-driven automobile, similar to units previously designed by Benz, which had utilized an electric starter (an adaption first seen in the Benz Velo).

THE FIRST AUTOMOBILE RACE

Karl Benz's Velo participated in the world's first automobile race. A Parisian daily newspaper, by the name of Le Petit Journal, organized the race. The editors of Le Petit intended to display horseless carriages as a viable means of transportation. Rather than fastest time, the automobiles would be judged on whether they were safe and cost effective to operate. It took place in 1894, starting in Paris and ending in Rouen. The winners of the Paris-Rouen race were Panhard & Levassor (Panhard) and Peugeot, both French manufacturers using Benz internal combustion engines. The Velo placed 5th overall in Le Petit's race. Benz had proven with this race that his engines and his automobiles were not only attainable, but also safe and reliable to operate. Eventually, manufacturers began optimizing automobile design for racing. In addition to promoting Benz and his automobiles, the Paris-Rouen race gave birth to modern Motorsport, which now includes the likes of NASCAR and Formula One.

Extensive construction work began in 1958 in the previously sparsely populated north of Wolfsburg, with the Tiergartenbreite and Teichbreite districts being built first, followed by Kreuzheide a few years later. As early as January 1961, a nun settled in an apartment in the Bartenslebenring, and began her pastoral work with home visits to Catholic families. Just four weeks later, the priest of the St. Christophorus Church, Antonius Holling, read the first Holy Mass in a classroom of the old Wolfsburg elementary school. Various chaplains later held services there. In 1962 around 1,000 Catholics lived in the northern districts of Wolfsburg, and a year later their number had risen to around 1,600.

In 1964 the first church-owned building was completed, the parish hall. Services were held here from Holy Week 1964 until February 7, 1965.

The then General Director of the Volkswagen factory, Heinrich Nordhoff, was personally involved in the design of the church. In 1960 he took part in the rededication of the Hildesheim Cathedral, which had been destroyed in the war, and so he wanted Wolfsburg to have a Romanesque Catholic church as well, in contrast to the modern church style customary at the time. The building site for the church was a gift from the local Volkswagenwerk AG, the design and construction management were taken over by the construction department of Volkswagenwerk AG under the direction of Robert Otto (1902–1986). On August 23, 1963 the foundation stone was laid by the Hildesheim Vicar General Adalbert Sendker, and on February 13, 1965 it was consecrated by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen.

The rectory was built in 1971/72. On December 25, 1982 the parish of St. Bernward was established. From 1984 the pastor of St. Bernward Church also looked after the Immaculate Conception Church in Velpke, about 11 kilometers away. At the time of reunification, contacts arose with the parish of St. Anna (Stendal) in the GDR. In 1993 the community hall was renovated and the entrance area with cloakroom, kitchen and toilets rebuilt after the previous building was demolished.

On July 15, 2005, Peter Herbst, the church's last resident pastor, retired and left Wolfsburg. Since then, the pastor of the St. Christophorus Church has also been responsible for the St. Bernward Church and the Velpker Church is looked after by the pastor of the Church of St. Michael in Vorsfeld. From November 1, 2006, the St. Bernward Church will be part of the Wolfsburg-Helmstedt deanery; previously it belonged to the dean's office in Wolfsburg, which at that time was renamed and enlarged to include the Helmstedt part of the then-dissolved dean's office in Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel. Since September 1st, 2010 the church belongs to the parish of St. Christophorus.

Volkswagen Arena, also known as the VfL Wolfsburg Arena due to UEFA sponsorship regulations was opened in 2002 and named after the automotive group Volkswagen AG. The Volkswagen Arena has a capacity of 30,000: 22,000 seats and 8,000 standing places. It is located in the Allerpark and is the home stadium of the football team VfL Wolfsburg.

The most striking feature of the stadium is its sophisticated roof, which was designed as a truss-supported membrane structure.32 radial trusses, each 40 metres in length, make up the support system for the fire-retardant PVC membrane, which is 15,000 square metres large. The membrane is translucent, aims to improve the atmosphere in the stadium for the spectators and supports the natural growth of the grass on the pitch.

Seating

The Volkswagen Arena is a two-tier stadium with a surrounding promenade. The lower level has an inclination of approximately 25 degrees, the upper level 40 degrees. The ground area of the entire plot is around 115,000 square metres and the floor space of the stadium is around 28,000 square metres. The stadium's capacity of 30,000 consists of 22,000 seats and 8,000 standing places. The standing places can be converted into 4,000 seats.[3] The guest block of the Volkswagen Arena contains 1,886 seats and 900 standing places with separate kiosks and toilet areas. All seats in the Volkswagen Arena are completely covered.

A total of 31 boxes with 332 seats are available at the stadium, which also offers 198 so-called Executive Seats, which are integrated into the VIP block, and 1,434 Business Seats with direct access to restaurants. The Volkswagen Arena is home to a 102-square-metre-large Skylounge above both grandstands with 35 seats. This offers a view of the entire stadium and is also used as a venue for other events and even weddings. The control room, which houses systems such as the fire alarm system and police equipment, is located above the Skylounge.

The special features of the Volkswagen Arena include seats and spaces for people with disabilities and their companions. Spectators with impaired vision are provided with a total of 10 seats with headphones so that they can hear the commentator during the match. Furthermore, 80 spaces are available for spectators in wheelchairs. Families with children can book seats in a separate area at the Volkswagen Arena. VfL Wolfsburg also offers childcare during all home games at the stadium. A separate area is provided for younger and shorter spectators so that they can get a better view of the match.

VfL Wolfsburg also became the first Bundesliga club to play in an LED-lit stadium when the Volkswagen Arena was equipped with a new LED floodlight system at the start of 2017. The old floodlighting of the Volkswagen Arena consists of more than 170 elements with lamps, each weighing about 35 kilos. They were all mounted under the roof and together produce about 1,500 lux. The 84 speakers in the stadium, which weigh 120 kilos each and are likewise mounted under the roof, produce a total of 600 watts. There are also two video walls covering an area of 53 square metres in the stadium. The pitch is covered in hybrid grass, which is natural grass that is reinforced with synthetic fibres, thus improving its weatherability. The Volkswagen Arena was the first Bundesliga stadium to introduce such a system.] From the outset, the pitch has been heated so that matches can be played regardless of ice and snow.

The Volkswagen Arena was also the first Bundesliga stadium to debut 5G technology on match day 5 of the 2019/2020 campaign against Hoffenheim.

Wolfsburg

It was opened in 2015 and replaces the VfL Stadium on Elsterweg as the home ground for the women's and youth teams of VfL Wolfsburg. The AOK Stadium has 1,700 seats and 3,500 standing places. It is located in the Allerpark in the immediate vicinity of the Volkswagen Arena and the VfL Center. The VfL football world is also located in the building.

In July 2012 it was announced that Wolfsburg AG would build a new stadium in Allerpark for VfL Wolfsburg. Among other things, this should offer the women's team at VfL Wolfsburg a better environment. She was previously at home in the VfL Stadium on Elsterweg and won the German championship, the DFB Cup and the Champions League in 2012/13. Women's football should be further promoted by the new building. The Allerpark, where the Volkswagen Arena is located, was chosen as the location for the AOK Stadium. Wolfsburg AG acted as client and project controller and is the owner of the stadium. Strabag and Züblin were commissioned to build it. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 30, 2013 in the presence of representatives from VfL and Wolfsburg AG, VW works council chairman Bernd Osterloh and Lord Mayor Klaus Mohrs. The total budget for the new construction of the stadium, VfL Center and surrounding facilities was around 30 million euros.

In March 2014 it became known that the construction work could not be completed as planned for the 2014/15 season, but only for the second half of 2015. In 2014, the new training grounds for football players and goalkeepers were completed. In the middle of the year it was announced that AOK Niedersachsen would give the stadium its name; the health insurance company secured the rights for five years. Most of the construction work on the stadium was completed by September 2014 and the outdoor areas were then laid out.

The AOK Stadium was inaugurated on January 23, 2015 with a friendly between VfL Wolfsburg and Karlsruher SC. Individual media criticized that the women's team did not play there first. At the same time, the VfL Center was put into operation, where training, meeting, fitness and therapy rooms for the professionals and the offices of the VfL Wolfsburg management are located. The stadium has also been home to the VfL football world since the beginning of 2015, with an interactive exhibition about the club. With the roofing of the three standing room grandstands, the construction work on the stadium was completed.

After the AOK Stadium was initially only the home of the women's team and the U23s, the VfL U19s have also played their home games there since the beginning of the 2016/17 season, especially in the A-Junior Bundesliga North / Northeast.

The VfL stadium on Elsterweg is a football stadium with a six-lane athletics facility. The stadium was the venue for the VfL Wolfsburg football team until 2002 and the home of the VfL women's and second men's teams until the end of 2014 and has space for 17,600 spectators.

Around 1940, a sports field was built east of the school in the city of the KdF-Wagen. In its place, the stadium was inaugurated on October 10, 1947, and it became the new home of the first VfL men's team. On May 1, 1961, the newly built, covered main grandstand was inaugurated. It was built from concrete elements according to the plans of the Wolfsburg architect Hans Tiedemann.

After the VfL men were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1997, the stadium was renovated and expanded to a capacity of 21,600 seats. Due to the completion of the Volkswagen Arena, the last game of the first men's soccer team took place in the VfL Stadium on November 23, 2002. After the VfL professionals moved to the new venue, the stadium was reduced to a capacity of 17,600 spectators (12,500 seats).

Since then, the women's team (Bundesliga) and the second men's team (Regionalliga Nord) have played in the VfL Stadium. Furthermore, the second women's team plays their home games on one of the side courts of the VfL stadium. The arena was one of the largest stadiums in the women's Bundesliga.

On October 25, 2001, the German women's national team played against the selection of Portugal as part of the World Cup qualification. In the 9-0 victory of the DFB-Elf, Conny Pohlers became the first German player to score five goals in an international match.

In addition to the individual soccer teams of VfL Wolfsburg, the athletics department VfL Wolfsburg e.V. - Athletics uses the stadium.

future

When VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH built a second, small football arena for 5,200 spectators for the U23s, U19s and the wolves in the Allerpark by VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH, the old stadium on Elsterweg lost its importance at the end of 2014. The AOK Stadium was opened in January 2015.

It is not yet clear what the future will look like on Elsterweg, because the site is in need of renovation worth millions.

Porschestrasse looked like the main street of Wolfsburg. It was named for Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, the designer of the Volkswagen. Wolfsburg had a modern appearance, like no other German city, and was designed for automobile traffic. It looks like all of the cars on the street are VWs.

Wolfsburg came into exist when the Volkswagen plant was first built in the late 1930s. It grew with Volkswagen in the 1950s and later. Before that, there was only a small castle, which was depicted on the steering wheel of the Volkswagens that I owned.

The Wolfsburg is medieval lowland and water castle in North Germany that was first mentioned in the records in 1302, but has since been turned into a Renaissance schloss or palace. It is located in eastern Lower Saxony in the town of Wolfsburg named after it and in whose possession it has been since 1961. The Wolfsburg developed from a tower house on the River Aller into a water castle with the character of a fortification. In the 17th century it was turned into a representative, but nevertheless defensible palace that was the northernmost example of the Weser Renaissance style. Its founder and builder was the noble family of von Bartensleben. After their line died out in 1742 the Wolfsburg was inherited by the counts of Schulenburg.
