Wind storms in the Sierra Nevada mountains often break off small limbs. Recently, Nevada County suffered a heavy wet snow storm which broke off tree limbs and broke the crowns out of many conifers. This is one of those tree limbs in black and white.

For the All New Scavenger Hunt #14 - Forces of nature.
We got about 7 inches of snow yesterday, so my son went out with the snow blower to clear the driveway. The machine shoots the snow neatly to one side unless the wind comes along and blows it into the air assuring that he comes in coated with snow to make the maximum mess on my floors!

From the Horizon series by Phil Koch, turning natural Landscapes into Portraits of nature.
I created the series of Horizons in 2010 as photographic journey through the landscapes of Wisconsin. I rarely shoot in the same location as the sun rises and find the meadows that most just drive by without a second thought as the best place to wait and watch.

There's something I really love about wind, which is funny because I used to hate it entirely.
Growing up in a valley in Alaska, we had very aggressive gusts of winter wind, and it would keep me up at night thinking our house would blow over.
Then I grew up and started to see wind as something like a testament to how small and weak I am. Wind is so innately strong and huge and powerful, and somehow I started to see that as a good thing.
Now, wind reminds me of how little control I can attain over my own life as well as all circumstances, which is more freeing than scary. Gotta love wind.
