We spotted these beautiful wildflowers, Texas Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush flowers, on the side of the highway during our recent road trip.

* This rather lovely mixture of wildflowers was not seen in some pristine part of the countryside . Instead they were grown in the wide central reservation of a major road passing through an industrial part of Hull. Well done Hull City Council Highways department for having some imagination and one hopes raising the spirits of some people commuting to work

The Purple Prairie Clover has a thimble-shaped flower head ½ to 2½ inches long at the top of the stem with the flowers blooming from the bottom of the spike up. Tiny 5-petaled purple flowers with orange or yellow-tipped stamens are densely packed around the cone. The calyx is woolly, dull gray to rusty red, and easily visible in the upper spike where flowers have not yet bloomed. Best viewed large.

Part of our wildflower garden last year

I found these cute tiny wildflowers near the woods in our neighborhood. They were supported by a decomposed branch and green leaves. I was happy that I could shoot them from a good angle to exhibit their trumpet shape. Besides, the sunlight enhances their natural beauty; how lovely!

Wildflowers bloom a bit later at this higher altitude. Approximately 6200 feet here. Takes awhile for the snows to melt but when they do it is a visual treat.

Taxi Green Story..

Another example of our local council seeding roadside verges with wildflowers. Sounds, and looks, great. Not everyone is happy though. In some cases the seed mixes have contained non-native species, some of which can become invasive. If the non-native flowers cross pollinate they will pollute the genetic diversity. They can also affect the ecosystem by flowering at different times, impacting the insect population. And if they don't self seed successfully next year then there will be carbon cost consequences with the council having to re-seed annually. Every silver lining has a cloud it would seem. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy them.

Potentilla (Sulphur Cinquefoil) are members of the rose family. These wildflowers are approximately 3/4" across with five pale yellow heart-shaped petals. Best viewed large.

Saw this lovely coloured wildflower in a hedgerow on my Easter Sunday walk. Don't know its name.

I saw several types of wildflowers on the descent from the "Hoher Ifen". This photo was taken close to the "Karst" photo, which means there was a lot of limestone.
