A just for fun shot., It somehow reminded me an old Roman or Greek mural
Two great mythical birds clashing over some great prize way back in antiquity
(Sad case of too much imagination maybe)
In reality it was two Kites who had no serious intentions of conflict., they were in fact just playing
No harm came to either of them
The most spectacular of all birds of prey?
The largest of the Falcons and of course the fastest animal on the planet it's definitely a contender
For me (of the ones I've actually seen) the Red Kite still 'edges' it..,but never the less this is one very special bird
1/50th second shutter speed., for a 'different' perspective on this beautiful Egret
Regularly used to great effect in motorsport., panning (I think) can be equally effective in wildlife photography
Todays cameras are highly sophisticated pieces of equipment and it's fun to stretch them (and yourself) to the very limits
As I drove north along Montana’s Highway 200 in late summer, a small island nestled on the waters of the Cabinet Gorge Reservoir caught my eye. This little gem shone brightly amid the forested slopes and distant mountain peaks. Overhead, a flock of geese swept past in near-perfect formation, their graceful flight adding life to an already magical scene.
The Cabinet Gorge Reservoir winds through the rugged Clark Fork Valley of western Montana. It is a narrow, forest-lined channel that eventually merges with Idaho’s magnificent Lake Pend Oreille to the northwest. To me, this wilderness felt timeless—a landscape framed by the steep, brooding walls of the Cabinet Mountains and an ancient gorge shaped by glaciers long ago.

Two instances of the same bird. I was very lucky to get the shot(s). The distance was probably a dozen meters or so, handheld, (without monopod).

They nest in many remote areas, where it is less affected than the other bluebirds by competition for nest sites with Starlings and other invaders.
Hummingbird Moth (Clearwing Moth). They feed on the nectar of flowers, hovering with the body stationary. So easy to miss as they are so small.
One from my archives of a Great Grey Owl ...note the nictating ( second eyelid) , an instinctive reaction when there is a possibility of eye injury as when landing on a perch...
Such majestic birds, we were very fortunate to encounter this African Harrier-Hawk close to the road within the Kruger National Park on safari with Wild Wings Safaris. Awesome.
These well-named birds are often heard before being seen, but this one was quietly foraging around the grounds of Lower Sabie Restcamp.

Had a very enjoyable few hours with this youngster last Tuesday. He has been around nearly three weeks and during my time there he managed to catch and consume three fish.
In celebration of the little bit of rain we've had this week, this is a shot from the last evening rain. Parking lot outside Buffalo Wild Wings. The blue is actually Aspen Dental, so you can go get the wings cleaned out of your teeth.
To blur or not to blur?... that is the question!
And its a question I suspect all of us have mused from time to time
A crisp sharp wing showing all its detail., or a wing with slight motion blur conveying movement and action to a photograph
Which is the best?
Like many of us I've browsed through pages of 'pro' shots and seen spectacular examples of both
So the truth is both techniques have their place in the photographers armoury., which is a good thing., because without variation we would all eventually end up with the same shots!
Racing across the wild lake
Wings they fly, wings they make
Their way to a place, well known
Where every year they are blown
Over land, past the trees
Wings they spread, ride on the breeze
Across the skies of blue and grey
Flying, flying , far away
This Bald Eagle looks like he means business and by the bloodstains on his head feathers, I think he is serious about it.
Hunting or hunted?
This Southern Yellow-billed Hornbill spent as much time checking for threats overhead as it did hunting for termites in the termite mound it was sitting on.

Happy 70 months to Mindy & I! After work, decided to eat at Buffalo Wild Wings since their wings are half off. Gotta love that mango habanero. Pretty crazy, but in about two months, it's going to be six years for us which is really crazy.

I'm no Ornithologist (far from it) but I thought a Fulmer was a variation of Gull
Go to the bottom of the class., wrong!
With their stiff wings and that amazing 'tube' like nose they are in fact related to the Albatross!
That's the really enormous (sometime bigger than an eagle) seabird but are not now found in the Northern Atlantic
Apparently fossil remains indicate Albatrosses were once up 'our way' (the Northern Atlantic) but all that remains today are their 'off-shoots' like this beautiful Fulmar
So I suppose you could call him our 'mini Albatross'
A beautiful Barn Owl captured in the early evening sun going about its routine of quartering the fields in search of food. Always a pleasure to watch and photograph.

I have two crows who pay me a visit each day. They are real beauties. I don't attempt to get too close to them as they are wild and I respect that.
