The Little Narrows ferry takes exactly 2.5 minutes to cross the river. And, it has been providing this service for many years. An old and famous church of the same name stands off to its side. It's location is Whycocomagh, N.S. and their motto is "we are a friendly community." We wait patiently along with 3 other vehicles for the arrival of the next ferry. It reaches our shore full, and delivers 6 vehicles.

The sun is setting and shadows are long. We are closing in on the blue hour and the water is calm. Our time on the this side of the narrows on this tiny island, has been well spent because we depart with multiple photographic treasures.

Whycocomagh, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and St. Patrick's Channel, an arm of Bras d'Or Lake. Salt Mountain, so named because of a salt spring at the top, is just emerging from the fog. This is shot from the Mi’kmaq First Nations community of We'koqma'q.

By the way, if you ever visit this idylic area and want to pronounce the name "Whycocomagh" like the locals, say it like this: Wacogama. Pronounce the "coco" part like "coconut," and they'll know immediately that you're "from away." :-)

That name is a mouth full! This lake side town on Cape Breton's Bras D'or Lake is a gorgeous little community typical of the area. Fall was just starting to break out in some serious reds as the days rolled by.....this town is only a few kilometers from the Cabot Trail and town of Baddeck.

- from Charles Bruce Fergusson's "Place-Names and Places of Nova Scotia" book - WEST BAY (Inverness County) - this community is at the south-western extremity of the bay of the same name, and near the boundary between Inverness and Richmond Counties. The former name of the bay was St. George's Channel and the community was known as St. George's Channel Shores. West Bay had a Postal Way Office between 1855 and 1864 and a Post Office between 1864 and 1867. The population in 1904 was 730; in 1956 it was 66.

- from 1908 "Lovell's Gazetteer of the Dominion of Canada" - WEST BAY, a post village in Inverness County (Cape Breton Island), N.S., 8 miles from West Bay Road Station, on the I.C.R., 15 miles northeast of Point Tupper, on the Gut of Canso. It has 2 Presbyterian churches, 3 stores, 1 hotel, 1 grist, 1 carding and 3 saw mills, besides telegraph office, and port on Bras d'Or Lake. The population in 1908 was about 700.

Lime and marble industries are in flourishing condition. The population in 1919 was 730.

Located in Inverness County , name of post office is PORT HAWKESBURY; situated on the Strait of Canso and on the Inverness Coal Co.'s railway, 1 mile from Point Tupper on C. N. R., 72 miles east of New Glasgow and 90 miles west of Sydney. Has a fine harbor, steamers call here on their way to and from P. E. Island twice a week; a steam ferry connects with Port Mulgrave. Contains a large cold storage plant, several stores in all branches of business, telegraph, telephone, express, Royal Bank of Canada, 1 hotel, weekly newspaper, printing plant, 2 fish curing plants, 4 churches, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian and Catholic. The population in 1919 was 1,000.

The Ship Harbour Postal Way Office was established in 1823 and closed in 1832 - it re-opened in 1847 - it was upgraded to a Post Office - 1 October 1859 - it became the Port Hawkesbury Post Office - 1 October 1868.

Ainslie Glen is a small community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in Inverness County on Cape Breton Island. It is about a mile and a half south-west of South Lake Ainslie. In 2016, a tree on Crown Lands was chosen to become the Boston Christmas Tree.

AINSLIE GLEN, a post offce in Inverness County, N.S. (Cape Breton Island). The nearest stations are Alba, on the I.C.R. (5 miles east of Orangedale) and Mabou, on the Inverness and Richmond RR., east of Port Hood.

The Post Office in Ainslie Glen was established - 1 June 1904 and closed - 12 August 1957.

It contains 1 Presbyterian church, 4 stores and 1 steam saw mill, and is in telephonic communication with Orangedale. A steamer calls here daily from Whycocomagh. The population in 1908 was 150.

The Postal Way Office at Little Narrows (No. 1 / A) was established - 1 July 1864 - it was upgraded to a Post Office - 1 January 1876 - it became Hazeldale - 1 December 1914. The Hazeldale Post Office was permanently closed - 31 October 1964 owing to the provision of mail delivery service via Little Narrows RR No. 1.

It has 1 Episcopal church, a public meeting hall, lodge of the I. O. G. T., and a few stores. There are extensive limestone and fire-clay deposits, as well as copper and coal mines, in the vicinity. Recently there has been erected a large dam across the river, with pumping plant, for forcing the water of the stream to the works of the Dominion Iron & Steel Co., about 5 miles distant. The population in 1908 was 140.

Coxheath (Cape Breton County), Nova Scotia is located on the north side of the Sydney River - 2 miles southwest of Westmount. The population in 1956 was 675.

Whycocomagh (Why-cog-ho-mah) is a Canadian rural community in the province of Nova Scotia. The population in 2001 was 854 residents. It is located on the eastern edge of Inverness County in the central part of Cape Breton Island. The community sits on the northwestern shore of St. Patrick's Channel, an arm of Bras d'Or Lake. Whycocomagh is a Mi'kmaq word which means "Head of the Waters." Nearby is a Mi'kmaq reserve where wooden sculptures and baskets are made. The population in 1956 was 311.

The name is descriptive. Early settlers included Hugh McMillan, a native of Fort William, Scotland, who after migrating to Nova Scotia in 1806 and living for nine years at Antigonish obtained land here about 1821, and six brothers named Malcolm, Duncan, Neil, Donald, Angus and Donald (the turner and miller) McMillan who came from the Isle of Muck in 1822. A school existed here in the 1870's.

Everett Howard Bean (1916 - 1991) was born in Sherbrooke, Quebec and raised in New Haven, CT - he attended Wheaton and Calvin Colleges and graduated from Westminster Seminary in 1941, ordained in 1943 by the PCC. He served in Bathurst, NB (1941 - 1953), Kensington, PEI (1953 - 1962) and finally Sydney (Bethal), Cape Breton, N.S. until retirement in 1984. Clerk of the general assembly for 39 years. He was highly respected in the denomination.

St. Lukes Presbyterian Church is located in Bathurst, New Brunswick, a community along the north east coast of New Brunswick. St. Lukes was established from a Presbyterian Congregation that began in 1827. The name St. Lukes was adopted in 1841 and has been a Presbyterian witness in the community since that time. The current church building on the corner of Murray Ave. and St. Andrews Street was dedicated to the glory of God on June 27, 1946. The minister at that time was Rev. E. H. Bean. Since that time nine ministers have served the congregation of St. Lukes.

Whycocomagh (Why-cog-ho-mah) is a Canadian rural community in the province of Nova Scotia. The population in 2001 was 854 residents. It is located on the eastern edge of Inverness County in the central part of Cape Breton Island. The community sits on the northwestern shore of St. Patrick's Channel, an arm of Bras d'Or Lake. Whycocomagh is a Mi'kmaq word which means "Head of the Waters." Nearby is a Mi'kmaq reserve where wooden sculptures and baskets are made. The population in 1956 was 311.

FORKS BADDECK - a post office in Victoria County, Nova Scotia, 6 miles front Baddeck and 16 miles from lona Station. It contains 1 Presbyterian church and 1 saw and grist mill.

The first Postmaster to serve at FORKS BADDECK was Andrew R. Watson - he served from - 1 July 1860 until his death in 1891.

Andrew Rose Watson (1817–1891) was a prominent early settler and the first postmaster of Forks Baddeck, Victoria County, Nova Scotia.

Postmaster Career - Service Years: He served as the postmaster for over 30 years, from September 1, 1860, until his death on March 3, 1891.

Location: The post office was established at Forks Baddeck, a community situated along the Baddeck River, approximately 10 miles from the village of Baddeck.

Personal Background

Vital Statistics: Born on February 27, 1817, in Nova Scotia, he died at the age of 74.

Family: He was the son of Robert Watson and Isabella Rose. He married Ann Ross in 1845, and they had several children who remained in the Victoria County area.

Community Role: In addition to his role as postmaster, he was a farmer. His long tenure in the postal service made him a central figure in the early communication network of rural Cape Breton.

John Grant Peters (was the keeper of the Low Point Lighthouse from 1865 – 1910). His son Charles McNabb Peters served immediately after, from 1910 to 1929.

His mother and father - Peter Edmund Peters and Elizabeth Muggah.

His wife - Mary (nee McNabb) Peters (b. 1829 in McNab Point, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia - d. 1910) - they had two children - Eliza Margaret Peters (1866 in Low Point - 1937) and Charles McNabb Peters (1864 - 1949).

The Low Point Lighthouse is one of the earliest and most important light stations in Nova Scotia, marking the eastern entrance to Sydney Harbour. It has a rich history spanning nearly two centuries.

Key Historical Milestones - Established: The site has been continuously occupied by a light since 1832. The original structure was a wooden, octagonal tower built to guide the increasing number of coal-laden vessels entering the busy harbor. In 1878, the original tower was reinforced and fitted with a larger, 12-sided iron lantern room, the last of its classic type still in use on an operational lighthouse in Nova Scotia. A steam foghorn was installed in 1903, followed by a third-order Fresnel lens in 1922, which was manufactured in France. The original wooden tower was replaced by the current, taller concrete octagonal tower in 1938, but the historic iron lantern and lens were transferred to the new structure. The station became part of the Maritime Telegraph System in 1881 and served as a Port War Signal Station during both WWI and WWII. The lighthouse was de-staffed and fully automated in 1988, ending the era of resident light keepers. The lighthouse is a recognized Federal Heritage Building due to its historical and architectural significance. Coastal erosion is an ongoing concern at the site, threatening the tower's foundation. A local non-profit group, the Low Point Lighthouse Society, now cares for the remaining keeper's house and is working on preservation efforts and plans to develop the site as a tourism destination.

It is 240 miles from Halifax, 45 miles from Sydney, 40 miles from North Sydney, 136 miles from New Glasgow, 12 miles from lona station on the C. N. Railway. A fine harbor and one of the prettiest summer' resorts in the Maritime provinces. The Bras d'Or Steamship Co.'s steamers, make trips between Baddeck, Sydney, New Campbellton, St. Peters, Hawkesbury, Whycocomagh and all intermediate points. Victoria Steamship Co. steamer goes to Grand Narrows and lona twice a day, connecting with C. N. R. trains, and carrying the mails. Stages carrying mails run from Baddeck to Whycocomagh, 25 miles; Englishtown, 18 miles; Middle River. 16 miles; Big Baddeck, 12 miles. Baddeck contains a fine stone post office, court house, public library, customs house masonic hall. Royal Bank of Canada, Telegraph and Telephone offices, weekly newspaper, 9 stores, 2 hotels, 4 churches. Catholic, Methodist, Church of England and Presbyterian. Nearest railway station and express lona, 12 miles. The population in 1919 was 1750.

Blue's Mills (Inverness County), Nova Scotia - this settlement is about six miles southwest of Whycocomagh. It is named after Dugald Blue a miller. On Church's map the settlement is called "Blue's Mills." In 1904 Blue Mills had a store, a church and a woolen mill.
