Common Moorhens were fairly common but less common than their cousins the American Coots, which were widespread and present in large numbers.
This delightful little white-striped black is less than an inch wide from from one wingtip to the other. Find these tiny moths flying during daylight hours in dark damp shady woodlands where jewelweed (touch-me-not), the host plant for their caterpillars, grows. I rarely get a view of these white-striped blacks from below and out in the sun like this one was last summer.
This White-throated Sparrow appeared to be eating a leaf. Hopefully there was an insect on the leaf for a meat course.

I love the white markings on wings, head and legs.
The Black and Tan Page or Rusty-tipped Page (Siproeta epaphus), also known as the Brown Siproeta, is a New World butterfly that lives all year in tropical habitats. It has large wings, averaging 7.0–7.5 cm (2.8–3.0 in), that are black in the inner portion of the top surface and brown throughout the underside. Both surfaces have a bold white transverse stripe continuing across both wings. The outer portion of the forewings, beyond the white stripe, is rusty orange in the widespread subspecies S. epaphus epaphus; it is mostly or entirely black in the other two subspecies. S. epaphus is found throughout Central America, where it is one of the most common butterflies. Its range extends from southern North America to central South America. The range includes (though may not be limited to) south Texas and rarely southern New Mexico south through both eastern and western Mexico to the Guyanas, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru.

Although not a rare bird, this is the first White Crowned Sparrow that has appeared in my backyard in 40 years. It is a bit larger and more robust than the ever-present House Sparrows that are seen in our neighborhood.
As quickly as he appeared, he was gone, not to return.

Same species as yesterday's post, but this one is the more typical variant called the 'white stripe', since those markings are so clearly visible on its head.
According to allaboutbirds.com,
the White-throated Sparrow is a 'large, plump sparrow with a long tail and fairly small bill. Bold face pattern with black and white crown stripes, yellow spot between eye and bill, and neat white throat patch on gray face and breast.'
I photographed this bird in the springtime as the leaves and blossoms were gracing us with their lovely colors.
I like the way the bird was facing the other way, but then gave me a nice facial pose when it turned back to look at me.

Heliconius comprises a colorful and widespread genus of brush-footed butterflies commonly known as the longwings or heliconians. This genus is distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the New World, from South America as far north as the southern US. The larvae of these butterflies eat Passion flower vines (Passifloraceae). Adults exhibit bright wing color patterns to signal their distastefulness to potential predators.
Heliconius butterflies have been the subject of many studies, due partly to their abundance and the relative ease of breeding them under laboratory conditions, but also because of the extensive mimicry that occurs in this group. From the nineteenth century to the present-day, their study has helped scientists to understand how new species are formed and why nature is so diverse.
Because of the type of plant material that Heliconius caterpillars favor and the resulting poisons they store in their tissues, the adult butterflies are usually unpalatable to predators by bright colors and contrasting wing patterns, a phenomenon known as aposematism.

A pair of older grizzly cub siblings, still wet from trying to catch salmon, stroll along the lakeshore at Chilko Lake, British Columbia. The front one has the blonde colouration and the unique white shoulder stripe often seen in bears from this area.
